So you decide to train your armorsmiths by ordering them to make a thousand iron boots, melting them down after each one.  If you can recover 100% of the metal, then what's the downside?

This doesn't seem like the kind of behavior we want to encourage.  Seems like melting should be a one-time thing for stuff you're sure you won't use again, or a desperate way to get materials quickly for a war machine.

But maybe I'm wrong...Do we want to melt things down repeatedly for cheap skill training, or is there some other downside we want to the melting process?

The downside is that the lost metal is converted directly into heat energy.  It causes a dwarf to lose his sense of manhood.  You can't have a beard if you don't have a face.

just make harder to upgrade dwarfs skill in metalsmithing or/and lesser chance of getting high grade items. In my mind metal deposit is My treasure, My Precious...Precious!   After all dwarfs are masters of metal crafting! I think there are many ways to do dwarfs life harder. Dwarf needs Masterful Crafted shining armors and hammers to defend fortress from invaders! If you create many masterful items then it attracts more invaders. They want My Precious!

P.S.
cheap skill training is already in adventures mode for throwing and sneaking

I think the low melting returns are good for game balance.  In my current fort all my iron comes from melting down the armor of slain goblins/humans.  Minus what I used for some weapons and half a dozen suits of plate, I've got about 90 bars sitting around.  If it returned 100%, I would have something on the order of 300 iron bars.  That seems like an awful lot of iron to simply be given from the goblins.

You'll notice that to smith a soldier's equipment takes about 10 or 15 bars of metal, and yet dwarves seem pretty happy about walking around armored.  Apparently the dwarves wastefully throw all the scrap metal away.

About balance - there is no limitation for carpenters in skill trainig - if you have forest you will never run out of trees.

Yes, but wood is far less useful/valuable than metal - you can't make much of any use out of it.

Except for beds, barrels, bins, ashes, charcoal, and obsidian short swords.

Well OK, apart from the beds, bins, barrels, buckets, charcoal, ash and obsidian short swords - what has the wood ever done for us?

Yes.  And while I try to fix errors before they're published, sometimes a couple get missed.

4 errors in this post corrected.

Wow. Is this true? :P I just set all the iron bolts lying around to "melt" and I was worrying about wasting my precious charcoal. Hmmm....
