Farming in DF2010
« on: April 01, 2010, 07:37:32 pm »

It appears that I can't farm on soil underground in this version?  Are we back to irrigating?

It seems we are. :(

Now I have to figure out how to rescue a fort built on an extreme-cliff map, with the water source a good 7-8 z-levels below the farms I dug out, and no livestock industry.  Aboveground farming ftw, I guess.

Are you sure the location you are trying to farm on is soil and not rock?

I was able to build a farm underground but couldn't assign plump helmets, pig tails, dimple cup or cave wheat seeds to grow on said plot, all of which I started with. I haven't attempted to irrigate yet.

I can confirm that irrigation is required.

Any suggestions on irrigation? Such a total scrub at it.

Basic irrigation is quite simple.

Dig a series of little interconnected 3x3 rooms on one Z level. On the next floor up, dig channels through the roof at the very center of each room. Designate each channel as a Pond, Not Full. Dwarves will then grab a nearby bucket and dump water into the center of the 3x3 rooms, slowly muddying them. Set the rooms to inactive once you finish watering a room so it won't flood entirely and drown your dwarves. Designate the room as a farm plot and then profit.

so no immediate zlevel below surface irrigation without poking a potential hole in my fortress after bucketing a shitload of water?

Bummer, too bad they couldn't just throw water on the ground. or make a barrel of water explode.

Makes sense, used to be able to do it and now can't. Thought it was just difficulty increase due to it being too easy to farm a whole -1z for plump helmets and feet an entire fortress

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Yay!

Strictly speaking, it is also a feature.

I don't care for said feature. I hope it gets changed back.

In the meantime, though, bucket irrigation is for squares. My procedure is to find a murky pool and dig into it from my farming rooms. As long as there are some cheap wooden doors in the right places, it should be pretty easy to get a 1/7 layer covering everything.
