I followed the guide as well, yet only the squad commander is doing any training. She's doing "individual combat drill" repeatedly, while the other two under her command are doing regular civilian jobs with their uniforms on and everything. When I go to the military screen it says "1 squad, 3 soldiers, 0 active"

Their schedule is set up to be training all year with 2 dwarves minimum. Yes, I have set their alert status to "active/training"

So what am I missing?

The underworld:

Well you can forget underground rivers and pools. Now we have caverns. They seem to be filled with large angry creatures including the dreaded GCS aka ole' 8 legged stabby death bastard. You will find underground trees/shrubs here and preirrigated/ muddy tiles fit for farming. There are also typically large underground ... lakes? Basically there is a lot of water down here. You can fish in it for cave fish and turtles. Only a portion of the cavern is revealed when you dig into it. The rest must be explored by dwarves.

NOTE: DO NOT LET YOUR GUARD DOWN HERE. DF now uses something like a "line of sight." If the dwarf can't see it from where he or she is standing that means YOU as the player can't see it. Creatures don't show up in the units screen. Your only way to know if a GCS is there could be when your dwarf is eaten by one. IF you are lucky, you might notice patches of GCS webs before this happens; they do seem readily visible in some cases (unlike in previous versions). If you go into a cavern, go in strong and armed or don't go at all. Also cover the tunnel between your base and the cavern with traps to prevent underground intruders.

Moreover, if you dig a little below this, there seems to be the possibility (certainty?) of old ruins. These things are infested with VERY strong undead.
I sent in my warriors, one of whom was very skilled at kicking. Naturally, I sent him there to kick the skeletons square in the nuts. 'quare in the nuts.... Imagine my dismay to learn that skeletons don't seem to have those. The undead wiped out the entire squad,except for the highly skilled kicker, who somehow escaped.

I will say that the best part seemed to be that a skeleton might have very well beaten some of my best dwarves to death with its own arm. It was either that, or the skeleton was already missing at arm and it picked up someone else's armbone. Either way that's one pissed off dead guy.

Liquid sexiness of freaking death Magma:

Alright so there's good and bad news here. The good news is that there is lava EVERYWHERE. It doesn't matter where you embark. The bad news is that it is literally about 100z levels down. This of course means that I will need at least a 110z level stack of magma proof pumps to properly poor it on top of elves. Barring that, I will have to find a way to lure the elves underground....

Moreover, Magma is surrounded by dangerous as all get out things that want to kill you. Actually, I like to think that they are friendly and want to hug me, only they're ... you know... on fire/made of magma. Towards the top of this layer, you will perhaps see a pool or two of magma. Further down you will literally see an ocean of magma. There are pillars of addy here, and most of the other rock seems to be something called "semi molten rock." You can't dig through it, so you have to go through the addy pillars to go lower. On second thought, do not dig lower....

There be a "circus" Below..... do not scroll down unless you want HFS details.















HFS
Well, just like magma, this seems to be everywhere. It is located below the magma oceans. If demons are clowns then this place is the freaking circus. They are everywhere and come in many kinds including winged demons. This is pretty much Hell.

Knowing I was now screwed, I figured I'd try to deal with this:

1.) I walked my legendary kicker over to the first clown freaking demon, I saw and issued a kill order. My kicker tried to kick it square in the nuts... 'quare in the nuts.... The clown playfully killed him in short order. This is a multi level hell in the very bottom levels of the map. Avoid at all costs. Remember kiddies, the "circus" is "fun" and full of clowns....

2.) Kill it with water: didn't work.

3.) Kill it with fire: didn't work

In the dwarven entity raws you can see that the Arsenal dwarf has [REQUIRES_POPULATION:20] I got to that pop cap but I still couldn't assign the job.  I was going to do some testing on it by reassigning some tags to other nobles, but then I couldn't contain my excitement and I decided to just breach the new HFS anyway.  Was salt, blood, and magma all over the place, good call.

He tore its brains out with his pickaxe. And then pulled a leg off.
We butchered it and had a glorious feast.

Thats a 'probably' for an answer.  I was going to test taking out that tag and, if that didn't work, giving all the responsibility tags the quartermaster has to a noble that seems to be working fine like the bookkeeper.  If you wanna test that please to tell me how it went!

Well, if i edit the raw (i have no real grasp of modding so i just changed the number 20 to 5) and gen a world i can appoint a Arsenal Dwarf, but sadly i cannot edit the current game. (The way from the  entrance to the dining hall leads through 3 waterfalls! Sad to give it up.) I might have to start again.

I have no idea how stable it is though. I appointed him and equipped a squad, it worked, but no further testing was done.

To mod the running game, try your Dwarf Fortress folder, then: Data -> Save -> Region -> Raw

At least it works for modifying the reactions of the smelter and speed of the dwarfs without having to create a new world, so popcaps should work too.

Well, i am stupid for not looking close enough, i just did not think about checking the other folders...thank you!

EDIT: I tried, but not possible with the game that is currently running.(Maybe if you embark again on in the same region, but i cannot test that now)

Ok, so I was starting a new fort when I noticed that I started at over $200K in fort value but nothing I had was even close to that. I checked the "R" rooms menu and what did i find but this:

"Upright (*Adamantine Two Handed Sword*)"

Yes, that's right, there's a freaking sword in the stone on my map on z level 92.... This of course leads to two questions.

1.) What's guarding this thing, aka, waiting to kill me?
2.) Can my dwarves actually use a 2 handed addy sword?

same here, one just jumped me out of NOWHERE and killed 2 of my 7 dwarves and heavily injured one. oh, and im just mining out my fortress so i have no hospital or beds or anything to heal the dude......were all gonna die.   hahaa

Seems the safe bet is to stay on the top layer until you have a military and trap line set and are prepared to send it down.
