So the work around for the farming bug is it can still be built on muddied? Or does it just have to have a water source touching it? That's kind of an important bug to get around for a stable fortress. :P

I really enjoyed my first few hours of gaming, the UI is a lot better IMHO, it was a while since I last played DF and the ESC thing had me confused, I kept reaching for the space bar all the time. I might have to change that.

But when my miner hit the first cavern system, I was actually gobsmacked. It was so, foreign and wonderful I just sat there exploring it for like 20 minutes before finally deciding on what my next fortress should specialise in. Underground fishing village.

Problem is, theres no fish!!!

Other than that, the underground stuff still is a lot to take on board, I'm really really having a tough time getting used to it (that isn't a bad thing though), it feels a lot like the old 2d DF, in that theres unexplored areas you need to go to. The exploration thing is really interesting. Y'know, bunch of dwarves head down the stairs from the surface only to come across a magical forest of awesome.

Edit: The caverns are muddied anyway, so dig down to them and find some good farming land.

I've come across something strange while building an above ground hospital.
This:

##D##
#XXX#   #=wall    D= door   X=stairs
DXXXD
#XXX#
##D##

was the only access, but even though the doors weren't forbidden or anything, the dwarves refused to path through them. Makes invasions a little more interesting, but otherwise not a big deal.

First thing I tried was arena mode. I put a bronze colossi against a squad of 8 ogres wielding iron greataxes.
.
.
.
One minute and a half later the colossi had crushed them all to death, without a single dent to his pretty bronze skin. Megabeasts are seriously much more powerful this time. I checked legends, and none of them actualy died during worldgen! Oh god yes.

You guys are lucky. I decided to generate a Large map, just because. I was lucky enough to get only one reject.

Of course, the world's history spans 1050 years. It only just now finished, after so very, very long. I hope Toady isn't going to release anything to force me to start over again.

On the plus side, I guess the history will be interesting.

EDIT: Uraroslar, "Maligneddrill", dark fortress. Population: 89 goblins

My initial impressions:

Holy crap. Level -168. Holy crap, that thing is deep. I'm not sure I dare to dig beneath first five :o

Oh man this is exiting.

What is this farming bug?
I've had no problems creating farm plots and planting seeds on them both above and below ground.

Only click it if you really want to know. I remember reading Toady saying that it will be all of five minutes before someone finds the HFS and blabs it all. I'd never thought I'd be doing the blabbing. But if someone has to do it it might as well be me!

Tried it for the whole evening. Worked fine until it eventually crashed, destroying 3 in-game month of work in the process for no visible reason. Grr.

Random thoughts :

- The ESC key to exit menus is annoying. I immediately changed it using the interface.txt.
- The FPS has dropped even lower. Plus, it seems to have some burst of slowness every now and then... I guess it has something to do with the underground. By the way, a cave-in occurred as soon as I embarked.
- The Health screen is badass, and the hospital seems to be the most complete room / zone of the game. I can't wait to have some interesting diseases or injuries to see that at work.
- The military screen is confusing at first, but it seems to have a lot of possibilities.
- Lot of new skills like Observer, Fighter, Miscellaneous Item User etc... I hope we'll quickly find out what it does.
- One of my fighter nearly died of dehydration because she couldn't bring herself to stop training and go take something to drink. Since she doesn't have a remarkable willpower, that's more likely an oversight.
- Migrants have killer stats now. I got a high master carpenter, a great clothier, proficient fighters etc... They also seems to be less numerous but to appear more often, which is more natural and less confusing for the fortress.
- I'm thrilled by the whole teacher thing, but don't know where to start. Do I need to build a special room ? Does it only applies to military dwarves when sparring or does it works for other dwarves ?

For the moment I really enjoyed it, except for the crash of course. Great work !

Looked at the descriptions for some of the forgotten beasts. A spindly, quadrupedal creature made of aventurine? Ooh, sparkly.

I haven't gotten to play with the underground yet because I've been focusing more on getting the basics set up during this first year of the fort. FPS is running smoothly at close to the cap of 100 after the first two migrant waves.

My FPS is just dandy in adventure mode and arena, but as soon as I start a fort, it plummets.

I had some weird graphical glitches (lots of flickering,) but they went away when I turned off partial print, so that may have just been my computer.

I think I'll dive into the raws soon and make some new plants. I miss my rainbow of dyes.

I've spent about twenty minutes just looking over my individual dwarfs. First impressions? They're a bunch of fat, balding, snaggle-toothed jerks. Nice.

Now that I've actually started my fort, yeah, it's very slow. Not slow enough to be unworkable though.

First thought: jesus christ, that's a lot of minerals. :o I embarked with chalk on the top layer, and it's bauxite, coal, magnetite and limonite as far as the eye can see. My entrance ran into a vein of native platinum within seconds. I dug a few levels down and hit star ruby. I plan on using bauxite for just about everything, I love that colour.

Also, yeah, everyone is ugly as fuck.

I only checked this in arena, but Fighter goes up like a rocket in combat, and Observer seems to be used as a way for highly skilled combatants to predict attacks. This is really just guessing though.
