I just had the messages:

You have discovered an expansive cavern deep underground.
You have discovered a deep pit.
You have discovered an expansive cavern deep underground.

appear all in a row just like that. not sure why. Looks just like the level 2 cavern...seems to have skipped level 1 entirely.

No, you have a not-bottomless pit connecting two caverns.

thanks for clarifying that, haven't had it before.

also, I appear to have some very laid back alligators on this map. My dwarves go by them all the time, freak the fuck out and run away only once every 4 times they go near it.... they went to chill out in my dining room for a while and my expedition leader sat next to one while he ate... wish I got a picture of that, but I'm not good with screencaps.

I did.  I had some 20 Z separating the two caverns.

Kobolds are scary badass in this version.

In the last one a wrestler could beat the tar out of any of the cowardly thieves! In this version they never retreat, they never stop stabbing... my militia commander has several scars from fighting just one!

Oh good! Makes them that much easier to get into traps!

Cage trap, disarm, then throw in a big pit with some military standing around and enjoy!

Hmm, I think I just found a bug with digging down. Has anybody else had there miners just stop digging and say they have "No job" when you dig down far enough? I had a solid up/down stair case going for 33 levels (Got lucky and hit a pillar in the cavern) and suddenly they don't want to know about level 34.

Finally have an honest-to-goodness fort up and runningish now. The new version killed my frames per second, so I've had to downgrade to 2x2 embark, but that makes it easier to wall the openings of the cavern I'm now stationed in off. No more blind cave ogre attacks for me!

Also, if anyone has any tips for increasing FPS, I would be eternally grateful.

I've done this: regenned world with less z-levels (50 total here), temperature off, weather off, and installed Baughn's DF Accelerator.

with 50 z-levels, do you still get caverns and HFS, though?

Yes, 20 levels of solid rock, then caverns, then magma sea at ~40th, and then HFS.
Thats still more than i can mine out, so i see no reason to have 150 levels.

Well there is always the fact that with 150 I ht about 5 caverns going down.

Interesting point: in 40d you needed to find something cool underground to get a dungeon master, do caverns count, or does he come either way now?

Yeah, I've had this bug a few times. Do you have any flowing liquids on your map, like chambers that are slowly being flooded/irrigated? Twice I've run into this problem with my miners, they wouldn't get to work, apparently the area around the mining designation is deemed 'impassible' for some reason. Both times I had different flows, once was my farm area being slowly flooded, another time was magma draining down into an underground chamber. Both times the mining designations were no where close to these flows.

Another possible issue is that it could be that you've dug PAST the first underground cavern and are now in the 2nd Underground Cavern. In my experience, for some reason this screws up job designations, especially when trying to collect webs because they'll want to path through the 1st cavern to reach the 2nd, even when the 1st is undiscovered.

Start trying to dig to level 34 in other areas away from the first staircase. I've also had luck designating ramps instead of stairs when the miners start canceling jobs for no good reason.

Well I didn't have any water flowing, but as soon as I embarked there was a cave in, so they might have moved some water around.

Ah well, add it to the list of bugs.
