Kickstarter: Donataware everything
« on: April 01, 2010, 01:26:40 am »

Donataware is an amazing principle- if you like something, donate! DF fans are already familiar with this method, and apparently someone decided to take the idea mainstream.

Kickstarter is a website.

...

More? Oh, ok.

It's a website that allows people to make microdonations to projects and causes, in return for anything from complete projects to goodwill. The innovative thing is that if you pledge to a project that doesn't get it's minimum bid, you don't have to pay anything. They've hosted a number of fascinating projects- fusion reactors, countless music videos, books, and movies, and less easily definable projects.

An excellent place to start: the Kickstarter site for Triggermen, a dark comedy graphic novel by some simply awesome people. (see a preview!)

Maybe a DF release on there somewhere? Donate $500 for beta testing?

Kickstarter's an interesting site (and potentially useful), but the amounts on there aren't terribly realistic as far as "making something happen." Most of the big winners on there would probably be as commercially successful if they just sucked it up, finished the project (as they would need to in order to get paid), and spent a little time (and not a lot of money) marketing it.

I guess there's a place in the world for folks who can't do a projection, though.
