Making Metal Alloys
« on: March 31, 2010, 02:26:11 pm »

Is it possible to make new metal alloy (like Rose Gold, etc.) types by editing the raw files?

Certainly! And it's quite easy to do. Just copy a suitable reaction form reaction_standard.txt and replace the metals as needed.

For example, to make an alloy that mixes silver with Nickel and Zinc you could copy Nickel Silver's reaction:

[REACTION:NICKEL_SILVER_MAKING]
[NAME:make nickel silver bars]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:2:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:NICKEL]
[REAGENT:1:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:COPPER]
[REAGENT:1:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:ZINC]
[PRODUCT:100:4:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:NICKEL_SILVER]
[FUEL]

And add in Silver instead of Copper:

[REACTION:SPECIAL_SILVER_MAKING]
[NAME:make special silver bars]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:2:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:NICKEL]
[REAGENT:1:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:SILVER]
[REAGENT:1:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:ZINC]
[PRODUCT:100:4:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:SPECIAL_SILVER]
[FUEL]

You'd need to have SPECIAL_SILVER as a metal for this to work, of course. But as you can see it's pretty easy to do.

Cool. Thanks.

For helping me out, I'll share with you what I plan on doing.

Have you ever seen those colorized golds before? You know that Rose gold is one, But there is many, many more out there.

I am adding several gold alloys, each accurate to real life mixing of metals. I will be asking about values for them in another topic when I am done searching around for actual made types, as well as requests for any other types.

When I am done, I will upload my metal and reactions.

You may want to hold off a bit, though. The next version is coming out in a few days and is making some major changes to the RAW files for metals (and all other materials). So any work you do now will only be applicable for the current version.

Oh. That's a real bummer.

In the meantime, I'll toy around and make one for this version.

Expect it for DF2010

Edit: I delved into the Wikipedia, and the spectrum for colorized gold is very broad.

I Might do the same for Silver and Copper, But I might not find as much info as easily as gold.
