Learning how to play D&D
« on: March 31, 2010, 04:33:46 am »

I want to learn to play D&D without subjecting my stupidity upon others or buying heaps of rulebooks. Does anybody know of a good site for this?

Try www.dandwiki.net, it contains all the official rules of D&D 3.5.

Unless you were talking about D&D 4, which I have never played, so I can't help.

I'm more looking for a 'my first character' guide to D&D, but that should help a lot.

I suggest a mono class fighter, barbarian or rogue as a first character. They are pretty straightforward to play. And you can still compensate the lack of magic with potions, wands or scrolls ...

Essentially, fighters are meat-shields. Put lots of points into con, dex and strength and you won't go far wrong.
To extend your lifespan, do try not to be directly between a wizard and the enemy. Especially if your wizard is a chaotic evil dwarven necromancer called Astesh.
I've killed about 6 combat based characters in our current campaign.

Any other forum and this thread would explode into a violent hurrdurricane with alignment disputes at the center.  I'm not entirely sure something similar won't happen here, either.

Anyway, fighters are pretty easy, but in 3.5e after level 10 or so the only people that do anything are casters without DM shenanigans.

the d20 SRD is pretty helpful, and has descriptions about almost everything.

dandwiki is okay, but it's easy to stray into the homebrew section.

This.  It's free, but doesn't have any of the splat books except maybe Unearthed Arcana or something like that.

I'd still buy PHB at least, it's handy to have it at the table.

I went to go buy the third players hand book the other day at a local dnd/card shop, and the guy was out of stock for all the dnd books which I would have wanted.
He just told me to find them online in torrent sites and such, (I had known they were there but I wanted the paper copies because they make for easier play)
I find the easiest way to learn to play, is to find some people who already play and tag in, usually in person of course..

Most hobby shops that sell dnd stuff would have some sort of club you could inquire about, act as your own DM and make it your first quest to do so.

This is unfortunately true.

I never figured DEX to be all that useful on a fighter.  Your armor inhibits your dex multiplyer, so why have more than 12 DEX and just wear full plate?

Multiple attacks.  Not everyone has to be a tank, you know >_>
