Dwarves won't touch bins
« on: March 30, 2010, 08:28:12 pm »

I somehow have a half dozen bins full of narrow iron armor that my dorfs have decided they want nothing to do with.  I've tried dumping them - they'll put them in the dump.  Then I un-forbid them - they leave them there.  If I erase the old dump and tell them to reclaim them, they leave them there.  If I make a new dump and ask them to dump them again, they'll move them to the new dump.  But I can't make them actually take them inside or get them to melt down the armor that's in them or do anything with them except dump them, bins and all.  I've tried using the "designate" reclaim, and melt, and neither of those seem to have any effect either.  I've togged "forbid" and "reclaim" on the bins a dozen time.  I've checked the global orders and it all seems correct.  I made an armor storage zone under them and then set the max bins to zero and that had no effect at all.  I made a food storage zone under them and they just left them there.

They are full of goblin armor and I want that Iron!  Any ideas?

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.

I asked the dwarves to move the bins to the trade depot and they did!  And left the armor lying on the ground where they still won't touch it....

Is the armor forbidden?

Do you have a metalsmith or something of that sort (with hauling disabled so he isn't distracted) and the proper workshops?

Nope, none of the armor is forbidden, and I've had a metalsmith hard at work melting down all the other goblin junk we've managed to kill.

I think I might have finally managed to get them to reclaim them by asking them to dump the armor, then removing the dump zone, then reclaiming it all.  Now it seems like they are actually moving them to somewhere useful.  I guess once they emptied and moved the bins that the armor was in, the armor somehow became "ok" for them to work with again, at least after I cycled through a "dump/reclaim" cycle.  Very odd.

'course now I have to hope they will actually melt it all down and not start ignoring it all again.   :-\

What likely happened is that the bins contained combinations of items that were not accepted by any stockpiles - in cases like that, they won't bother to take the items out of the bins. The solution is to either allow them to be assigned to a stockpile that accepts them (and then order some other stockpile to [t]ake from them) or, as you did, use the [d]ump function to empty out the bins manually.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
