Crossbow Range?
« on: March 30, 2010, 04:42:52 pm »

I built a 4z tower above my entrance, and I was wondering if a marksdwarf could shoot down from such a height.

The tower has a mini barracks and small food supply for the troops stationed within, just letting you know.

They should be able too, but they will have a minimum range limit when they do, as they can not fire straight down, they can not fire at an angle lower than 45 degrees (at 4 z levels up they will not be able to shoot within 4 squares of the tower base, maybe 5 depending on your fortification placement).

[Edit] Also it will add 1 to the range for each z level upso a target 4 levels down and 10 squares away will be at range 14.

I think crossbows have a range of 20 squares, total. So every z-level up reduces their maximum range (defying physics) since going down a z-level counts as a square.

I've found that 4 or 5 z-levels is pretty good. You still have decent range and you're high enough up that any attacking enemies have substantial penalties trying to fire through the fortifications.
