If I was going to be a paladin (not one of the default paths), what would be a good way to go about it?

Quickest and easiest would be to go with one of the builds from this post. They are fixed versions of the default paths and fairly beginner friendly.

By the way, I just got Notsoth off of Korthos, if I could get a guild invite. Mostly want to help build up the guild level so I can move over Kosoth without losing certain benefits.

I'm going to login the near future. Send a mailbox message to Duuvian or Naivuud with the names you want invited.

Also if you are low level (<10) and active recently I might send you a message offering you some of the gear I've accumulated and probably won't use.

Finally a bit of specific advice: if you are a barbarian or other axe user and you are low level enough that you can't get the improved crits feat, try to find yourself a Keen version of your weapon. I suppose that goes for any type of weapon but using a keen 2h ax at low levels on my barbarian really helped my damage output. With a crit 2h axe strike it's usually an instant kill on many low level enemies like Kobolds or Trogs.

Notsoth is still level 2.

Kosoth just hit 21 last night.

I think I'm OK for gear. And happy to give stuff away as people need it.

As for twink gear, just crafted a level 1 Keen Greataxe. Which I made out of a level 22 Greataxe that has double damage dice. Hopefully that will work nicely.

I could probably use some of that stuff when I get around to making a Paladin if I decide to later today, Duuvian. Unless its taken, the most likely name I haven't used yet will probably be Ardrera. I can invite him myself since I have an Officer character, but you can if you want. He'll be Lv.4 cortesy of me having unlocked Veteran I awhile ago.

Airship is now staffed with crew and shrines that will give out buffs for the next month. There is also a guild chest if anyone wants a place to drop some lowbie gear.

I logged in today and found much of my junk was probably in the mailbox storage system and probably evaporated. However what I have you can have. Send me a message in game with what your chars are and what their names are and I'll endeavor to mail you some stuff.

Can someone give me a rundown of what is limited from free players? I'm interested, but if like, 3/4ths the content is P2P exclusively then I'm not so sure.  :P

EDIT: I've given in to my curiosity and started downloading it through steam. I assume those builds Palsch posted eearlier this page are fine for general use?

A couple of races and a couple of classes aren't F2P, must be bought (half-orc, drow...). You can pay to unlock 32 point builds (you get 4 extra stat points, IIRC). Then of course you buy extra character slots.

Questwise, you're ok up to level 12 or so, but from that onwards there are fewer and fewer free quests, which means that leveling up from there is really hard, and finding people that aren't playing the paid quest packs is also a bit difficult. You're still going to have a blast up to that point though.

I *think* (been a while) that it's a good idea to buy a single point package, or go Gold for a single month, because then you go from being permanently free to being permanently "premium" which has some perks, like removal of limitations on chat messages and such I think, 2 extra character slots, and uncapped gold.

I'm apparently getting 500 points for signing up now, so that's nice. For the 32 point builds, is that a permanant unlock sorta thing, like with the races/classes (I think)?

And apparently you can grind up points via the favor system, how viable is that? I was looking at warforged or monk, but my 500 points aren't enough for that, so I want to know how much work that'd be, assuming I don't just spend it on 32point builds.

Going premium/gold isn't really an option unfortunately.

Yes, spending some money has its advantages, I particularly liked having the ability to auction more than one item at a time...

The game is perfectly playable without paying. There is enough low-level content to give you a bit of a run, and you can delete your character and start over again. I am not sure if the new underdark bit can be bought with points, but as a general rule, all the classes, races, and adventure areas can be bought with points, and you can get points based upon favour. Your first run through will get you more favour, so don't get too accustomed to the initial point accumulation speed, it balances out at about 25 points per 100 favour. You are advised to get more adventure packs initially so that you can get favour faster, and there should be enough race/class combinations amongst the free stuff to keep you going.
Favour is gained based upon the highest difficulty that you have completed each quest on. So you can run a quest on normal, gain a few favour, then run it one hundred more times on normal, get no more favour, then run it on hard, and get a few more favour, then run it on elite, and get still more favour, then run it on normal and get nothing again. Or you can run the quest on elite the first time* and then there will be no way for you to get any more favour out of that quest without resetting the character or getting a new one.
*to play a quest at eliteor hard difficulty the quest needs to be 'opened' on elite or hard, and only subscription payers, people who have completed the quest on the previous difficulty, or characters who have pulled some high-level shenanigans can 'open' a quest on hard or elite. So if you want to play a quest on elite, to get the maximum favour from it, then you need to get someone else to open it for you, or play through the quest on normal and then hard first.
There are various sales, if you do decide to spend money, then you are advised to wait for a double bonus point sale, which will get you a few more points for you money. I have seen adventure packs for 50% off, but that was a long time ago, the new low seems to be 35% which can then be lowered with the once-off 10% off coupon, which you probably want to save for something expensive... The vale of twilight is a popular choice for first adventure pack, it has a wide level range, good items, lots of favour, and is played often. Ruins of gianthold is also often recommended. There is a Free to play guide here.
The sales and promotions page seems to be updated about once per week around thursday/friday and often tells you about cheap items and has had a recent policy of offering free items of a vaguely useful nature. Right now there is a 20% sale on some storage items and a code to get a free temporary loot-improving effect. Note that most items bought from the store cannot be traded to other people, so will be lost if you recycle the character slot. Also note that some items can, technically, be transferred between your characters, but in practice the only way to do it is with a shared bank, so that is one of the items that you are advised to get early.

Oh, while I am here, note that you get some things for free just for getting enough favour. 32point builds are a long way off, but drow is fairly early and is sort of like a toned down version of 32 point build. I would strongly recommend saving your points and just trying it out with the options that you have, you can delete your character if you don't like it and get the character slot back, the items and experience go poof but otherwise you don't really loose anything. Adventure packs increase your ability to gain favour, so if you are in it for the long haul then you should save up for them, and wait until the free quests don't do it for you anymore, and preferably wait until the item you want is on sale. If you really need the specific race or class or ability point package to make you happy, then saving up for adventure packs and grinding favour for months probably isn't going to work for you anyway, so you may as well buy your favourite class and enjoy it, but please at least try saving your points until you have had a chance to see what you can do with what you have. Point grinding is possible, and can get you most things, but it has its limits, and is very slow, so if you plan to do then make your choices carefully, because you really have to work for your points...
