Ideas for a Megaproject
« on: March 28, 2010, 05:42:58 pm »

I need ideas for my first megaproject. The area I'm in has an overabundance of stone, as well as (due to me being a dirty rotten cheater) an abundance of blue Fun. I have magma and an underground river. I'm kind of iffy on the whole pumping thing, as I've never made pumps before, so I have no experience with them, although I could learn pretty quickly if necessary.

I was thinking I would perhaps create a pyramid tomb complex, or something similar. Decently easy to make and fairly fancy as well. I can decorate it with masterwork blue Fun statues or something.

overabundance of stone
What site doesn't?
Make a 10 or 20 (depending on map height) z-level inverted pyramid with lava falling off the edges into floor grates on the ground (where it gets recycled)

make your map split in half, separated by a giant magma river. on the west side, you will build one fort, another on the east. in the west, the nobles (and dwarves you like) live in luxury, but produce furniture to earn a living. on the east, there is the worker fort, producing everything else. however, they have friends and a cavern roof over their head, so they're happy. hold occasional "get-togethers" where they make friends, so that if one side crumbles, so does the other.

That seems a little sadistic. I'm trying to play as a (mostly) benevolent overseer. I want migrants to come to my fortress and partake of it's majesty and (cheated) wealth. The inverted pyramid is interesting. Would that be with the largest area layer on the surface, and the smallest area layer deep beneath the earth, or would it simply be built from ground level up?

Ground up is probably best.  Of course, if you're going for overkill, you can always dig out a giant hole in the ground and stuff the pyramid in there.

why is Dwarven science always on fire?
Because normal science is boring

Hm.... Alright. A pyramid sounds like a good beginner's megaproject anyway. I'll do that.

heres a cool megaproject:
drain a magma pipe, build a giant green glass fortress inside of it and move all your stuff and dwarves inside. then allow the magma pipe to refill around it. you are now forever trapped, in magma.
if you get migrants, dont worry about them, just let them wander around until they go crazy.

Mm... I like being nice to my dwarves, actually. I know, it's undwarfly, but I like to think that it works better. DF is the one place where Communism will actually work, and that's because it's not run by humans, it's run by me.

Separating them. Segregation is a bad thing. Besides, my Clerk, who will be my Mayor once I am able to get one, is in love with one of my engravers. Separating them would be a horrible thing.

there is an obvious solution: simply let her live at their fort. and they won't always be separated: the get-togethers.

hmm, I had an idea I'm probably going to do, you might too. Given the number of sieges, megabeasts and mormons my fortress has repelled I was considering hacking off the top of a mountain and building a set of gigantic stone balls.

The total amount of danger comes from the frogmen in my river and the fire imps in my magma. I have yet to be invaded, although two kobolds have tried their luck and gotten ripped to pieces.
