Lava-fall complication
« on: March 28, 2010, 12:46:51 pm »

So I thought it would be cool to have a ring of magma around my fortress' wall and a lava-fall at both ends at the entrance.
But now that I have the pumps pumping magma to the surface and holes that run back to the bottom of the pumps, a f*ck*ng tree grows in the way:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So does anyone have a good idea on how to solve this? I thought the lava would r*p* the sh*t out of that tree, but sadly that is not the case (the lava behind the tree is at [7/7]).

Preferably something that does not involve the horrible death of one of my woodcutters.

Perhaps you could try marking the area above the lava as a pond, and cast an obsidian wall that way, then have the tree cut down, and end by channeling the wall out from above?
Ex. Where T= tree, W= wall, and L=Lava

As a neat tip for the future, if you mark an area as a stockpile (even an empty/useless one) it counts as having a building on it and thus trees cannot grow there. Once the magma's in place, you can just use p-x to remove it.

Can you pond to cast obsidian?  I've tried and the water just evaporated.

Build a single tile walled in construction up top with material that will melt. You can build it, hatch/lever the bottom, and dump everything into the lava after you are done.

You have to have a full Z-level of drop for the water when using pond designations.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

make sure you make it a 2 z-level drop or the pond will be considered "full" and the dwarves wont do anything. then channel out the obsidian and hopefully if your miner isnt and idiot he wont fall in the magma.  (it happens)

This is what I did:

Step1:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I dug a mine shaft to my wall.

Step2:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Then, I constructed some walls (black), a water wheel (red), gears and axles (blue) and a pump (green).

Step3:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Performing step2 on the Z-level above and poked a hole to my mineshaft, pumping water everywhere (about 6 lye making dwarfs mysteriously lost their lives), then I channeled the obsidian out right after cutting down that damn tree.  >:(

Step4:
Tearing everything down before making screenshots and posting this.

Always, always construct floors outside as paved, magma proof roads.

Indoors I used paved roads as plants cannot grow on them, but they are not magma proof unless the material is magma proof, and I usually just make them out of stone blocks. But a stone block constructed floor, outdoors, is immune to heat and nothing will ever grow on it.

Well, that's one way of doing it...

Personally, I would've gone with the pond method (taking care to drop the water from 2 Z-levels up rather than just 1, as suggested by several other posts above) - less setup, less teardown, and nowhere near as messy.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I completely agree. Creating a waterwheel powered water pump system dedicated to getting rid of a single tree is Dwarven to its core. Rock on.
