Would Toady be fine with the idea of a DF fan-film?
« on: March 28, 2010, 02:59:32 am »

I'm thinking of possibly adapting either Boatmurdered or the saga of Cacame Awemedinade, simply because those are the two most awesome things I've seen in DF. The former is far shorter, and probably easier, but the latter is also entirely doable... would have to be a long epic though.

I'm not even sure if I'll do this, but I am considering it quite heavily.

I wouldn't think he'd have a problem.

Maybe if it were a snuff film or something.

You could also email 3toe and ask if you could use one of his stories.

I think you meant latter there? OR has Cacame Awemediande suddenly transformed into a epic of a thousand pages?

They're actually both pretty equally long.

Pretty sure boatmurdered is a lot longer... but Cacame would be pretty easy to expand upon.

Cacame's thread is approaching 900 posts plus a few offshoot stories written by HolyMittens; Boatmurdered is 66 updates, many of which are not very long. I actually wouldn't be that surprised if Cacame had a bit more content than the latter at this point. Boatmurdered's mythic status largely comes from the community's reverence for it rather than its actual content or length, generally associating the best moments of the fort with the entire succession game. Its legend is more than itself so to speak.

Regardless! Either would work fine for adapting imo. I expect you'd have to add and change a lot to either to get them to fit for a short film, anyhow.

Out of curiousity, are you going to tool the film around a comedic element or a dramatic one?

The tale of Urist the mad dwarf would be a great film

That'd work pretty well for a fan film, only a couple of character total.

I'm pretty sure that Toady wouldn't mind, provided you didn't make money off of it.

You'd want to ask the Boatmurdered crew before using their story.

Ditto HolyMittens or Eiba (I think that's who wrote One Dwarf Against the World, anyhow)

Boatmurdered's mythic status largely comes from the community's reverence for it rather than its actual content ...

You can easily tell apart people who were introduced to DF via boatmurdered and who were not. Nostalgia and first impression are both powerfull forces.

I'd go ahead and make movie about Cacame if you want to make heroic high-fantasy or Tholtig Cryptbrain if you want dark 'bones'n'despair' fantasy.

You know, they actually DO have potential for actual real LOTR grade movies if done properly.

The question is... how?
3D rendered, life action (please not), animated ASCII, flash...
