A lot of Garry's mod stuff requires Counter Strike models, so if you don't have that it kind of messes things up.

Yeah, you can do that. they have a huge network of tons of files n' shit. weapons, models, NPCs, props, you got it.

Not the CSS models. There's, you know, laws. But you can use the tools server owners use to load up their servers for free, and in theory you'd be able to get all the content you want (besides Portal and Episodic), but I haven't gotten it to actually work. At least I don't see giant red flashing ERRORs

You just gotta check out the forums. they got all these tutorials and shit.

Besides, they DO rip all the CS:S/L4D/etc props/models and put them up. I've got some meself.

Get GMod, it's infinetly awsome. It has Lua integration so modders can code pretty much anything.

Also, if you are getting HL1, the HL:source version won't be compatible with addons like NS or The Specialists (kung fu fighting game).

I've been poking around in that Gmod forum they have, facepunch. It seems to be full of immature 12-year-old morons bragging about the various nude Alyx models they use and endlessly cracking phallic jokes. The forum itself also looks as if it were built to draw people like this (IE: the description for the art section is "Post your boring short stories, ugly drawings  and home made noise. Basically post creative stuff that you created.").

Is the online (by this I mean the guys playing the game in its various servers) community a bit more mature?

Also, if I get Garry's Mod it'll be without CSS.

It's Wiremod. 

I'd say get the GMod/CS:S pack for $25. I bought GMod and figured out that a lot of mods use CS:S objects, then bought CS:S separate.

Basically yes, but it depends on which server(s) you visit.

You've gotta find a good server to play on if your going online. Because of the nature of Gmod theres alot of people who play the game just to grief people and destroy what they build. Plus alot of the RP servers havve terrible admins, and people who act like tits.

Id say the community isnt worse than any other game, you just have to find decent servers. Its just that because of the nature of gmod the arseholes tend to stand out more.

Well I guess to enjoy any sandbox game online you need to set up a server with some friends. And if people are being dicks I guess I'll just go with the half life pack, its seems to provide a nice amount of entertainment, and will fill me in on the story. I might get Gmod later.

Dont get me wrong, its not all bad. Theres plenty of servers that are well run and have very little asshattery. Some of them are quite heavily admin'd. After playing on a few servers you'd get a feel for which ones were worth sticking around on.

There are plenty of good servers. Don't go to general building servers and your fine. Also, try to stay away from any server that has not disabled ragdolls.

Plus, you can still create stuff in singleplayer.

They're not in any way legal unless you own have licensed copies of the games they come from. This is not even a gray area.

Yes and no. Certainly the Gmod community has it's share of douches and phallic-object constructors (Garry himself included). We call them mingebags, and we made a feature-length movie about them. It's called War of the Servers, and it's awesome. Every community has those people (with the apparent and inexplicable exception of the Bay12 forums, which I attest to DF's incredible awesomeness). 85% of the people you'll see on your average randomly picked server just want to build and get along, 95%-100% on known good servers (which you put into your favorites list upon discovery).

Facepunch is a cesspool, no two ways about it. Wiremod.com is much better, even if one admin who will not be named (chances are you'll find out about him within the year if you join) is a little trigger-happy with his infraction button.
