Messy messy

Maybe someone can help me, I've got all this crap lying around my fort with either an x or an X on both sides of the name i.e. x(pig tail shoe)x or X(pig tail shoe)X

What does that mean? I cant seem to get my dwarves to dump it or haul it to a stockpile.

It's an owned item that is falling apart. As for getting rid of it? I don't know, sorry.

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Build lots and lots of chests in a barracks or your dwarves' rooms.

Dwarves will pick up their items and put them in chests.

Drop chests into magma. Problem solved.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.
Only in Dwarf Fortress...

When you are looking at the item with the k menu, hit h to hide it.

Items with a double X from further use are auto-dumped into the refuse stockpile.

And then it's pretty much a normal fortress from then on.
I find the idea of a normal fortress amusing.

There's a reason all my dwarves have been running around naked for the last 15 or so years.  You just can't get rid of all their junk.  Even with responsible chest/cabinet usage, clothes will eventually be everywhere.

Yea, I'm pretty sure that I've managed to create the world's largest and most unsanitary nudist colony. just checked my woodworker's inventory and he's got no clothing or anything on but every bit of him is covered in blood, mud or vomit. I'm thinking of tying him up outside and just letting him scream obscenities at besiegers, reminds me of a couple of hobos I've seen

I think of dwarven mothers as dung beetles, except they are rolling their babies around.  Just trying to help them fit into society by covering them with layer upon layer of bludit (Blood, mud, vomit).

heh...

I made a big textile mill as my fort's "signature industry".  I also have glass, but I like to think of my fort as some sort of clothing capital of the world.  (I even nicknamed some of my legendary clothiers things like "Armani"... and others were named "Osaka"...)

Anyway, it's kind of odd, since at that kind of level, there's people running around with XGiant Cave Spider Silk Right ShoeX and *<<=Rope Reed Left Shoe=>>* because they don't have enough money (or the inclination to) buy the other shoe.
