Full Barrels + Brewing
« on: March 27, 2010, 11:32:22 pm »

Please help, I'm in so much pain right now. Basically, I'm trying to empty up a barrel and KEEP IT EMPTY so that I can brew with it, but every time my dwarves go ahead and fill it up with plants. I have no wood on the map, nor are my magma smelters up yet so I can't produce more barrels, my dwarves are thirsty and they are basically killing themselves. I've set mix food off, but as soon as they see the empty barrel they try to fill it. I've tried forbidding the barrel, then unforbidding it as soon as the brewing is about to start, but that doesn't work either.

Help?

Yeah I am, they're still filling it.

EDIT: Blah, nevermind. Thanks. I had to dump everything in it, dump the entire barrel, reclaim everything, then the barrel went into furniture.

Food stockpile set to accept ONLY food, and no barrels.

Booze stockpile set to accept booze and barrels.

Hopefully that would work, though I haven't tried it, and it's likely the dwarves will still attempt to fill barrels with food for a while.

No, they won't try to fill the barrels with plants or seeds in that case. However, you need to keep in mind that some food needs barrels as well (dwarven syrup in vanilla, at least). If you want to use that, then you need another special stockpile that accepts only such items. Or add them to the booze stockpile.

I usually create multiple food stockpiles:

Food stockpile near the farms that only accepts seeds.  Set to zero barrels, or not - you can store a lot of seeds in a barrel, so this doesn't take up much barrels.

Large food stockpile near the farms and farmer's workshops that takes plants with zero barrels max.  This is where your plump helmets and such get piled up.

Food stockpile near the kitchens that takes plant and animal extracts (including syrup and milk) which max barrels allowed.

Food stockpile near the kitchens that takes meat, fish, cheese, leaves, and other foodstuffs not needing barrels, with zero barrels allowed.

Food stockpile near the dining room allowing only cooked meals, with zero max barrels.

Finally. one or more centrally-located food stockpiles allowing only booze and max barrels.

It's more work to set up, but keeps me from running out of barrels.  Only booze and liquid extracts occupy barrels, and whenever the extract pile is getting full I set the kitchens to work cranking out syrup and milk roasts.  (Mmm, candied milk...)

The only surefire way is to have more barrels than you need.  It helps if you set Max Barrels on your food stockpile to 0.

Just use wooden barrels. What are you, an Elf?

I dunno, you guys have survived Thomas the tank engine, golems, zombies, nuclear explosions, laser whales, and being on the same team as ragnarock.  I don't think something as tame as a world ending rain of lava will even slow you guys down.

Reduce the amount of plants you're growing, or alternatively cook some booze to free up barrels.

Lack of barrels may be a serious problem on maps without wood, lava and underground river/pond.

You shoulda embarked with 1 of all your cheap foods.  Lots of barrels that way.  If I start to run low, I cook all my booze and then I have barrels to brew all my plants with.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Forbid the barrel, unforbid it when your brewer is going to take one.
Tedious, but can be done.
