Dumping Calculation
« on: March 27, 2010, 06:40:38 pm »

First:  Great Game,  thank you very much!
Second:  I tried searching for this before posting but didn't see anything specific.

Does anyone know how calculations are done for your dwarfs to choose which dump they will take stone too?  When dumping large areas of stone, I've been placing a dump zone in the middle of the stone to be dumped.   A small percent of the stone will be dumped there but the majority get taken to other dumping zones.  Often up 10 z levels and 30 some steps away on the surface,  instead of using the dump I just placed 3 steps away.

You should set your dwarves to have [SPEED:0] and only set ONE dump. In one tile (don't make it 20 tiles big or anything like that)

It's usually the closest. If they are already in the process of dumping one thing and you set a closer zone, they will ignore it until done with their one thing.

I've been setting the dump zone before telling them to dump, so that's not it and I've been removing the other dumps to compensate for this.  Happened to forget the one on the surface but hoped they would just go to nearest.  Oh well.  I'll just always remove them from now on.

@Darkond:   What would speed:0  do for me?

@Darkond:   What would speed:0  do for me?

It would mean that they move so quickly that they effectively teleport.  ...it's kind of cheating, actually.

It's RAW file editing. Maybe I do it too much. After I have a decent awesome fort Kingdom, I set speed to 350 (the highest agility speed of unmodded dwarves)

It's better than having 50 dwarfs spend the next ten years hauling 10000 stone.

There's whole things on the wiki on how to deal with stone.

But I can confirm that dwarves 100% want to throw things off a cliff, if that's an option anywhere. So make your dumps at least 2 Z levels up from the floor/magma.
