Dwarf Companion (and Elf King)
« on: March 27, 2010, 02:37:28 pm »

The Elf King, Sigun Shadowcraft*, has finally made it to my fortress. I've been doing a lot of reading on the subject, and learned that the appropriate thing to do in this situation is download Dwarf Companion, then change his Civilization entry to that of the rest of my dwarves.

Unfortunately, the Dwarf Companion download link (http://bartabox.banquise.net/df/companion-0.17d-any.zip, as far as I can tell) seems to be down!  :o

I haven't had any luck finding an alternate download site for it. Google's no help; it's full of astronomical phenomena (white dwarf companion stars, mostly) even if I specifically search for "download".

Does anyone know an alternate way to a) download Dwarf Companion or b) get an Elf King into your fortress?

*Sigun Shadowcraft is, unfortunately, not as awesome as Cacame Awemedinade. He fought a titan once, though, and he's been king for more than 130 years.

Thanks! I was having a lot of trouble finding it.

I should update the link on the wiki...

Thanks for the help. I have a new problem now:

To get your queen to come inside and hang around with the rest of your society, change her civilization tag to the same as your dwarves. Currently, she'll be set to the parent civ, but not the fort civ (though your fort is considered part of the same civ as your parent civ, they have different civ tags so that it can differentiate between the caravan and actual members of your fort. The tag doesn't get changed when non-dwarven nobles come). She'll come inside the fort and hang out in your meeting areas. She won't make any friends unless you kidnap some goblins and turn them into members of your civ.

As far as I can tell, the "civilization" tag on the King is the same as that on all the rest of my dwarves (it's "c"). But he's still listed as "Tame", and I can't assign his rooms to him.

This is literally the first thing I've ever tried to do with DC, so any help would be vastly appreciated.

In order to assign rooms to him, you need to change his species to Dwarf temporarily.  Although even if you do that, once you change him back to Elf, he's not going to necessarily use them, or do anything useful.  Dwarf Fortress doesn't handle non-dwarf civ members well.

Although, since he's 'tame', you should be able to assign him to a chain or cage if you want to force him to stay somewhere safe.

Thanks for your help. It seems the original Elf King bug has been partially fixed, as they used to come in as Friendly, rather than Tame. When my king's consort arrived, though, she was a Friendly and I had to change her civ tag. I'd report this as a bug if the new version weren't so close.

As you suggested, I turned him into a dwarf, assigned his rooms, and changed him back. I'll assign him to a chain during seiges, but let him wander about the rest of the time.

Thanks for all your help!

EDIT: Now the king and queen are thirsty. Great. I gave elves NO_DRINK to fix it, but is there something I'm missing?

no, they'll sit out there until they starve. Really, best thing you can do is temporarily change their race, get them to come inside, then change them back inside their chambers.

Oh, they're going to starve, too? I thought they were just refusing to drink, but I guess that has to happen more often. I'll have to change the raws again.

They did come inside when I made them Tame, though. That's probably a recent fix.
