Intense stare off
« on: March 27, 2010, 01:29:02 pm »

Occasionally, when two armies are about to fight, both freeze up. It hasn't happened lately, but I remember a time when goblins sat there, staring at my army, who didn't shoot or move an inch, no matter what orders I gave them. Both sides were frozen in time, it looked like. And I'm confused and decided to ask why/how.

They did eventually move, and this means I can't look at the game to describe what events surrounded the freeze. (no, it wasn't paused--everyone else could move) Is this a known bug, is it my fault, or what? (posted here because there is a high likelihood that I'm just being silly again and that this isn't a bug, like last time I almost reported a bug (then again this looks more like a bug))

And then it's pretty much a normal fortress from then on.
I find the idea of a normal fortress amusing.

Somehow, somewhere, I remember this being a bug with ranged dwarves, but I don't quite recall if anybody ever got to the bottom of it.

Happened with entire regiments, not just the archerers. Oddly, it affected the enemy too (THANK GOD FOR THAT). It's happened twice, once at my entrance, and one time I left the back door into my dining room open. Very tense watching the goblins at the entrance, frozen in time, as my military stares at that staircase.

EDIT: I commanded my army and they immediately froze. I don't see the gob army moving either.

EDIT OF AN EDIT: They just moved randomly

Well, I know this can also happen to melee dwarfs if there is a flying unit that's too dumb to go downwards, but that's as far as my knowledge of this problem goes.

they're probably just yelling insults at each other before the battle starts.

I remember once I sent my marksdwarfs to harass against a gobbo siege with no marksgoblins of their own who were waiting on the other side of a moat. One of the dwarfs insisted on staying and staring at the force after he ran out of bolts. It was disturbing because he wasn't leaving to sleep or eat or drink so I thought he'd starve to death if I didn't lower the bridge and fight. Right when I was gathering my forces to take on the goblins the marksdwarf went into a martial trance and siege literally ended right there because every last goblin was trying to target him, and was freaked out when he tranced.

Was hilarious watching 50 or so goblins just run from one arrowless markdwarf with no formal hammer training

I'll admit a few times I've seen something like this and then noticed *PAUSED* in the upper left.  ::)

If you don't allow an accessible path for the enemy to walk up to your community, they will mill about. They aren't stupid enough to just hurl themselves at your walls.

I doubt if this is your issue. I'm just throwing that out there for others.

they're probably just yelling insults at each other before the battle starts.
Dwarven Swordsdwarf: You foul-mouthed child molester!
Elite Goblin Wrestler: Stone-hugger!
Champion Speardwarf: Flea-bitten-dog!
Elite Goblin Lasher: Fox Beard!

the next version (after 2010) so needs insults...

Champion: You stole my baby!
Goblin Wrestler: Actually, that was a kobold thief we hired t-
*Champion crushes Wrestler with her sheer presence*
Champion: Shut up.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.
