How to edit Dwarfs gender.
« on: March 26, 2010, 05:56:29 pm »

Well I have a lot of females (as you might know from my thread in the troubleshooting place) and I'm wondering if it might be something gone wrong by maygreen, the tile set. So I'm wondering how i can get to the files that show a gender tag by my dwarfs? if you do know and would Like to tell me please, please tell me in step by step instructions like so.

File1>file2>file3>dwarf gender

Thanks

I'm pretty sure Dwarf Companion (check wiki) will allow you to make that change, but such modifications can easily have unforeseen consequences, and Companion is still in development, with a lot of dependencies.

So there's no little tag I can change like I can to turn music On from off? if not then I'm quite confused as to why my dwarfs are all female =P Although thank you for you reply any ways.

You try to perform direct edits on the files in your save folder and you'll be in for a nasty surprise. It's not packed in plaintext; you can open them up in Notepad and check.

That sounds what I'm looking for, but I'm a little confused on how I open something with notepad, see I'm not very good with dealing with Files and what not with computers so you'll have to bare with me a little sorry.

The number of females probably doesn't have anything to do with the maygreen thing.

However:  go to DFfolder/raw/objects/creature_standard.txt.  Then look for the dwarven entry (should be near the top).  See if it has the [FEMALE] tag (or something similar - I'm not sure of the exact tag).  If it doesn't, then the number of females is just a coincidence that should be remedied within a few migrant waves.  If it does, remove the tag.  You may have to generate a new world to get any effect from that, though.  Most tags that affect populations seem to require regeneration of a world.

Legolord I love you. That's exactly what I was looking for. Although now that I've gotten there I can't find any thing titles gender. The closes thing i can find to this is "[Genpower: 3]" I don't know what this is, so I just need a little bit more help and then i can finally play a game of dwarf fortress, without out having to wonder why I don't have any dwarf children to wonder around.

If there is no FEMALE, MALE, or GENDERLESS tag, then that creature will have a normal 50-50 split in gender.

Apparently having a redundant creature entry causes the game to say, "Oh, look, it's crazy world now. Nothing makes sense! Alligators live in houses!"

Hm.  Well, I don't know what more to do, but others probably do.  Chances are it's just the random number generator messing with you, though, so waiting for migrants might help a little, even if that is a bit of a long-wait solution.

I've had embarks with six female / one male before.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

1: any race with a gender tag(to make every member just one gender) won't spawn at all in world gen since they can't procreate!
2: Dwarf Companion is indeed what you would need to change any genders, not that I see why you would want to, one mother is enough for me!
3: using dwarf companion to change genders will also lead to funny side effects, as dwarf fort itself will only recognize that they've changed gender in it's code, and not in it's personality page and such, this will lead to samesex marriages and maybe babies too?

There's a 50% chance for each dwarf to be a particular gender; this means that about 7 out of 1000 embarks, they'll all be female. And another 7 will be all male.

I dunno. I seem to get 7 male dwarfs all the time.

Oh wait, no, I've just been confused by the beards.
