Hereditary Rule

I got a smile out of seeing this; a queen consort who's husband was king, was killed, and then her son took up the throne.

Do consorts retain their consort title even if their spouse dies(or at least until their successor marries)?

Yes. this leads to rather weird things with queens and female consorts, because their husband was king, and vice versa.

I tend to see the consort as an official BFF of the king/queen myself.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.
