Most Powerful Computer ever for DF?
« on: March 26, 2010, 07:41:02 am »

What's the most powerful computer DF has ever been played on?

I keep fantasizing about installing it on one of the Power 5 AIX machines at work, but I like my job.

Remember multiple processors don't count for DF.

I'm almost certain it would not run on a Power 5... the Linux version is compiled for x86 using a 32-bit compiled binary blob from Toady.

When we get multi-threading we should just go on and donate money to a "Let's rent a supercomputer and embark on a 20x20 map" fund.
Population cap: 2000.
And we get Toady to play it himself.

We could run it on Amazon's EC2 cloud I think.

Long-time DF player, first time poster here. Never actually bothered to sign up for the forums before.

I registered just so I could emphasize how incredible this would be.
We could actually make a bona fide capital city!
You'd need a means of upscaling sieges to match, however. A military of several hundred dwarves meeting a goblin army of (assuming the ratios that usually play out now) a few thousand attackers, charging the city on War Beak Dogs?

Yes please.

You wouldn't actually be able to see much of anything at once. You'd let all the Epic leak out without noticing.

Needs to wait for graphics and multithreading and a "zoom out" feature.

If you play with the 40d## versions there is a zoom out feature

Or you could play with a live 3D view along side. That would juice the Epic so much it could afford to leak a little.

Eh. I'd prefer keeping it ASCII but have a bigger map with more dorfs instead.

I meant keep the bigger map with more dorfs, and just use the 3D view to see all of it at once to avoid this:
