Can we make a spy-bot that sniffs for wi-fi signals?  Maybe we could go to the public library and see what we can get for books to improve our skills or use the computers to find and/or download programming tutorials.

But more important, I know how to handle the next part. I've played "My Life with Master". Go speak with Jason. Ask him how his day has gone, make idle conversation. Invite him inside, and demonstrate a small explosion by safely mixing some chemicals in one of the buckets (from a distance with tube if need be)

Ask him if science interests him. Probe for weaknesses during the conversation to use later to insure loyalty via a combination of fear and self-loathing. Also if he has any usable skills, or knows any connections.

We will take this boy under our wing, for no Mad Scientist is complete without his faithful assistant!

I agree, but if a crappy bot made from a bucket and forks is too much to part with, then we will _never_ get that shiny lab on the volcanic island (Oh or moon base..) that would make mom proud..
Bottom line, we need to prove ourselves, and we need funds.
