You decide it's time to sell the damn textbooks. Frankly, you need cash and they're useless to you except as a quick cash source.
After removing your lab coat and leaving your safety goggles in your lab, you hunt down the location of the Pawn Shop with your textbooks, tucking your handgun into a pocket you cut into the inside of your jacket, making sure the safety is on. There is no round chambered, you note for safety.
The pawn shop is managed by a middle-aged man who doesn't ask too many questions. He offers you forty dollars for the chemistry textbook and fifteen for the programming book. They're laughable prices, about a fourth of the cost to buy them new, but they're about as good as you can get without putting effort - and time - into the search. You grudgingly accept.
The Pawn Shop's inventory has little of interest - a general assortment of electronics is always available here (televisions, car stereos, speakers, weak-but-overpriced computers hardly worth their circuitry, and a few tools), as well as various hand tools if you ever lose possession of your Tool Belt.
Additionally, there are items of gold and silver - jewelry and the like - should you ever need them (for instance, if you set up infrastructure to smelt down whatever contains those metals to make your own custom circuitry).
