Where are the Elves?
« on: March 25, 2010, 10:39:18 pm »

I've got a small fort going in which I've seized all goods from the Elven caravan each year. It's late summer and they haven't shown up at all yet. I'd be fine if they were planning to siege me, but this not showing up at all thing is really starting to piss me off.

They probably are going to siege you soon. Means they don't like you.

He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

How soon can I expect a siege? My champions are eager for battle.

It can depend. It will come hidden, so beware. They like to be sneaky.

Actually, since my tradesplosion event, where I wiped out an entire elven caravan and took what portion of their stuff wasn't atom smashed (in self defense), and the previous year, where the elven caravan walked into a goblin seige after they left in a huff because I accidentally tried to trade the entire wooden bin, instead of its (non-wood) contents (totally not my fault... the goblin seige, that is), and the year before where they ALSO lost half their caravan to a goblin ambush (but it's OK, I traded with them first, and got a neat black bear), plus I somehow accidentally hit the option that made dwarves ignore lumber, so I had about 160 logs lying around outside, elves stopped showing up for me, too.

(I wonder why?  I have such neat stuff for trade!  I even gave away one of my 40,000 DB roasts to sweeten the deal!)

Anyway, my question is, do elves only seige in the Spring?  Or can I expect this to happen at any time, or even several times a year, like with goblin seiges?

Sieges are usually random. They come like ambushes. Except in large numbers. They have lots of wooden stuff or wrestlers so it isn't a challenge...

Well, that's still a reason to restrict my travel outside for civilians.  I need to step up production of my second lumber greenhouse, so I can collect wood in a protected manner.

No reason to let mere elves get a kill on my dwarves.

I'm pretty sure elves only attack in spring- I've played a couple maps where I was at war with the elves, and they only came to try to kill me once a year, usually mid spring.

Really? I had a map where they were at war with me and they send more ambushes than the goblins...

Until you get a squad of bowelves lead by an elite bow elf.  You will loose many dwarves.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Hmm... unicorns will be annoying.  I'll need to get that automatic slaughterhouse up and running before I get unicorns in the attack, or I might accidentally try to put perma-aggro unicorns in my slaughter mill, which would lead to some minor Fun until my military dwarves would get around to fixing that.  (Of course, I trap my animal stockpiles for just that reason, as well...)
