What's a fun thing to do with a hundred goblin skulls?
« on: March 25, 2010, 08:37:02 pm »

There's got to be something good, but I'm not coming up with it. I was thinking of strewing them all over the floors of my latest mega-project, but that seemed too mundane. The game doesn't supply anything good - the wiki says they can only be processed into totems, and it's no easier to come up with something to do with a hundred totems than with a hundred skulls.

Ideas?

Build a grand hall with clownite floors and walls stretching 90 tiles and line the skulls up to a masterwork gold chair encrusted with diamonds and pictures of goblins being killed made of carp leather.

Sadly, totems are about it for vanilla.

You could do something fun with a modified reaction, though.  Turn the skulls into a type of food item that can only be cooked, like a specially named leaf item.

That way, you can grind their bones skulls to make your bread!

I remember reading once about someone who lined their entrance road with skulls.

Mmmmm, bonebread, the worthless junk that sticks to your intestines and kills you!

Like the dwarves would care, they would eat their own feces anyway.

You could make a reaction that turns them into 'skull wafers' and build a skull tomb?

Build a replica WWII bomber 10 z-levels above your fortress' entranceway, connected with one support. Remove cave-ins, and remove the support.
There should be a 10x10 retracting bridge on the bottom, lined with goblin skulls. When a goblin siege comes, pull the lever.

Put them in your swimming pool, to remind your dwarfs of what happens to those that flunk swim class.

Strew them around your barracks, for extra-awesome sparring.

Make them all into totems.
Abandon.
Train up a legendary thrower in adventure mode.
Go to your fortress and collect them all.
Attack a goblin tower using only thrown skull totems.
???
Profit!

In one of my old forts, the crypt walls were lined with hundreds (about 700 I think) coffins, and the pillars (Moria style) were completely surrounded by bones and skulls. This all lined the way to my artifact vault. Not a single artifact was ever stolen.

Basically just set up a refuse stockpile that only takes bones/skulls and have it take from your main refuse stockpile.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.

The phrase "Skulls for the skull throne" comes to mind...

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I once had a fort where I decorated the tops of my walls with Orc skull totems, custom stockpile and make sure to not allow it any bins.

I also made an oubliette for a goblin squad leader I captured. Lined the floor with goblin bones and skulls

Is it possible to mod a reaction to turn totems into a material with which objects can be decorated, and if so, how?

"This is an obsidian throne. It menaces with spikes of exceptional Titan skull totem."

You would need to turn them into a new class of some item that you can decorate with, such as gems.  (Or replace an existing gem with skull totems.)

You would not, however, retain quality bonuses (unless you made it into a rough gem that your gemmakers could cut), nor would you retain the monster type that the skull came from, unless you made custom reactions (and gem types) for every sort of creature whose skulls you would perform this reaction upon.

Make bathrooms and use the skulls as chamber pots.
