I have always liked the narrative aspect of DF, the fact that while you play you actual create a story.
I was wondering, is there any way to save a record of the main events occurring during the game?
Things like births, deaths, waves of immigration, champions, attacks, sieges, the beginning and end of megaprojects, ...

I think they are all recorded in the Legends mode of DF. If you abandon your fort and load Legends, all the records of your fortress *should* be there. 'Least, your adventurers make it there...

All but the megaprojects are found in the gamelog.txt file in your main DF folder. But beware, this file contains each and every single announcement made. To make things less clutterd, I suggest making notes whenever something interesting happens.

I've checked the gamelog, but there's no date, so I guess the only alternative is to make notes of events.

Just a simple date with a sentence or two to remind you of what happened works well.  Then, if you write it up later, that short blurb is usually enough to jog your memory so you can expound on the event in detail.

So of all the things you can do in DF, it's the fractal artifacts that make you think dwarves are crazy.

Never mind the magma falls, the atom smashers, the cog-and-axle turing-complete computers, or the colonizing of Hell itself... all those are fine, but man, those recursive artifacts! Where do they get such ideas?

Do the Legends not keep a record?

On the notes note (o_O??), even for non-important stuff I've grown to playing DF with the main window occupying the top half of my screen and the bottom half being a notepad window with recent interesting stuff, important dates, random civ notes, to-do-list, etc. It seems like a pain in the ass when you start but it's actually very helpful once you've gotten into the habit.

They do, but figuring out Legends is a pain in the ass. It would be so much easier if there were family surnames, but... *shrug*

I much prefer taking notes when something particularly awesome. "The Summer Siege" (coordinated chasm creature conflict) was a MUCH better name for the end of my fortress than the kill lists of some troglodytes.

Do the Legends not keep a record?
They do, but it's limited to births, arrivals, deaths, finding clowns, abandoning the fortress, what happened to any survivors, and etc. Things like champions and such I'm not sure (haven't bothered to check my last fortress' history that extensively, all the d.1002's aren't fun to look at) It's also very annoying to look through, so, it's much easier to take your own notes.
