I don't know whether I should be scared or excited.
« on: March 25, 2010, 10:52:45 am »

I just found my underground pit. I looked around a bit, and saw a Giant Bat, a Giant Cave swallow, and to top it off, I looked at some webs thinking they would be the normal Cave spider webs, but they were not. I noticed the Giant bit and then sat there with my mouth open. I am sure as hell gunna stay off that level.

It may not be on that level. Drop a kitten down to see.

... Sounds pretty awesome to me.

Maybe put a door or wall it back up for a little while, then dig out a wider hallway there.  Line the hallway with cage traps.  Then chain a cat behind them all as bait.  Carve fortifications in all the walls around the hall if you can, so that there is plenty of visibility, and then deconstruct that wall or door, so that the cave critters can come play with the widdle kitteh.

Well actually, I dug down into the top of it, so there is no tunnel already.

Oh good, then you can set the hall of cage traps enslaving more creatures making new friends up at your leisure.

Umm, no they can't. No creatures can climb up/down walls unless there are ramps (or unless they can fly or the area is submerged). Granted, it's possible for creatures to attack across Z-levels, but they can't move across Z-levels.

Where exactly did you get the idea that they could climb?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Climbing sound like an awesome idea though. If it's beside a wall, it can move freely up/down walls. Sounds like a pathfinding hog though :C

Hey, I'm cool with you tying a dog up and shooting it with a ballista if you're short on elves, but there's not need to lie about it to us.

They can webwalk. This doesn't mean they'll naturally path up the hole, though.

If you look at the wiki, [WEBBER] is suspected to imply flier.  For all intents and purposes, this would simulate their ability to climb along webs.  I've had little experience with them myself, however.  Feature Creatures tend to stick to their own little area, though.

Now, if you can see giant cave spider webbing (the little you can see at first) on multiple levels, does that mean you have two?  And if you do have multiple, will revealing one with a kitten get the other(s)?

So of all the things you can do in DF, it's the fractal artifacts that make you think dwarves are crazy.

Never mind the magma falls, the atom smashers, the cog-and-axle turing-complete computers, or the colonizing of Hell itself... all those are fine, but man, those recursive artifacts! Where do they get such ideas?

They can webwalk. This doesn't mean they'll naturally path up the hole, though.

They can't actively move up z-levels, and I've yet to see one actually walk across their floating-in-the-air webbing yet though the raws seem to indicate Toady wanted them to. But even if they hypothetically could walk to directly underneath the hole in the ceiling, it wouldn't be able to actually get in per-se.

Repulsion, it's actually very easy to catch a GCS if you know it's there beforehand (and believe me you WANT to catch the GCS). It's all just digging right up to each level, setting up some cages and a bait animal, and then opening up the level to that floor. Possibly kitten-dumping as well if the creature's on the other side of the pit and doesn't see the bait animal. And even that's more complicated and over-cautious than the average GCS capture.
