Now I want to play DW again. Agh. I'm never going to finish my servers if I keep getting distracted.

Man, I find managing my economy really tricky if I play as a pirate.  I need to get out of the mindset of 'see valuable resource --> build mine', since that doesn't seem to be as productive/viable as saving all my immediate cash for bulking up my fleet and raiding the hell out of any colonies I find/looting any rival pirate gangs.  I keep getting curbstomped by other pirate clans with fleets two or three times I size of mine, as I've been trying to build up what I'd normally consider my 'infrastructure'....except that I don't need any infrastructure, I'm a goddamn pirate fleet!  Stupid brain.  :P

In the end, it's up to you to decide if it's worth it to you. I would postulate that if you make decisions based on the videos it probably isn't for you. I don't say that as a "dis" but rather because this game depends on you setting your own goals and finding your own particular type of fun from it. It has a very unique and strong ai system that allows you to decide how much involvement you want. The enemy is competent and challenging and the universe is pretty interesting. There are about a dozen of us B12'ers who do not regret the purchase but I am sure that there are at least a few who might.

Only do the mining thingy with strategic resources, and only if you are a smuggler.

Do it less if you are another kind of pirate.

I've been playing as balanced so far.  Given that my usual (imperial) playstyle is fairly passive, smuggler might be a better pirate route for me to go, I guess.  Might give that a shot.

There are about a dozen of us B12'ers who do not regret the purchase but I am sure that there are at least a few who might.

When I first got DW, I only got the vanilla game - and I didn't like it.  It took a while for me to stare at Shakturi and Legends and decide that they might add some of what I was subconsciously missing (like directed research - as a Space Empires fan, I longed for that!)  I finally splashed out and got both Shakturi and Legends.  This improved the game in my eyes to the point where I didn't regret the purchase, but I still wasn't enjoying it as much as potential rival space-strategy games.

I bought Shadows a couple of weeks ago, and I'm now immensely enjoying the pre-warp game.  How much of this is due to the features of Shadows (playing as pirates, huzzah!) and how much of it is simply due to the overall game growing on me over time (and me learning the ropes) I really can't decide.

tl;dr - DW vanilla is not, to me, worth its price.  DW, Shakturi and Legends are, to me, worth their combined price.  DW, Shakturi, Legends and Shadows are, to me, good value for their combined price.

Part of Matrix Games' strategy is that their games are priced so that you will invest learning the game proportional to how much you paid for it. If you do, you really start to understand all the subtleties, and the game "grows on you". If you paid $5 for all of this, you might not give it a second look :)

Paradox games are just as complex as Distant Worlds. I think the creator shot himself in the foot by going to Matrix, since they are not going to Steam. That is a huge loss of revenue. Selling the game for a fraction of the price there would get him a lot more money and customers.

I like the game, but the pricing structure is just foolish. Same applies incidentally to Dominions 3, a great game which potential player base was kept small by Shrapnel Games and their pricing. Now it is in Greenlight, I hope it gets through.

No, Distant Worlds still more complex than any
Paradox games and there is definite more quality control put in than any of their games

its up to them for game pricing im not going to argue at all, just if im buying this that box better be good :D

I quite enjoyed playinbg as pirate, sure the first few hours are quite hard as syou struggle to keep yopur claim and find more independant colonies to increase your claim, But once you get a few place going you can really rack up major money.

My latest game was even more challenging to me... Fire up the order screen... cannot build anything bigguer than escort and light freight WHAT?!

Send a few escort on a raid.... pirate enemy comes back with frigate and destroyer only WHAT?!?... Tried to do something against that..., i send all my escort and try for a deseperate capture, that would help me research wise... Total failure...

Lost all but 1 escort, luckily i had more building..... Change of plan... look like we are going smuggler route.... build up quite a decent amount of light freighter and start building mines everywhere, no defense mean im an easy prey,m i manage to get a truce with that pirate who had only bigguer ship.

THEN i had my luck... my explorer found a massive size 900 capital ship with monstruous tech on it.... Time to get payback dading! Blew up all oppistion with only one single ship, the capital ship i found. Then i started building more and more escort and capturing more and more colonies and so on. Funny how a single ship can turn the tiede of a game....

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Sounds like you're relying too heavily on the auto-design. It tends to make ships without checking what size of ship you can actually build. Design your frigate/destroyers yourself until you get better tech.

Just for curiosity, can I use the product code they give me to install on another machine?

Edit. Well fuck. It's kinda nostalgic installing it this way.
