So I was on my travels searching for a demon to kill in a goblin civ and while searching found a prisoner, knowing that if the demon had an even bigger kill list me killing it would be more impressive and decided to free the child.

But it wasn't a child, it was a diplomat?

Was this supposed to happen? do I wrestle him into magma? do I use him as a meatsheild against this demon or dragon I'm supposed to kill?

If you say something that ends in a question mark regarding Adventure Mode, the answer will always contain the word "magma".

In all seriousness ... that is a bit weird.  Usually recruitable prisoners are kidnapped children.  Legends will probably have the answer for you.

Prisoners =/= Slaves. I've seen prisoners chained to rooftops who were occasionally tortured. They were human crossbowmen and the like. It's rare though. I don't know how goblins can capture non-children.

If it was just a peasant, I would say he grew up. But a diplomat?

It's common enough when a civ is conquered in world gen. I've seen several elven diplomat slaves. Well I saw them, the're lacking body parts now.
