Let's play Jagged Alliance 2! Players Needed : 0
« on: March 23, 2010, 09:33:38 pm »

No longer taking players!

Ha ha! Damn right, Jagged Alliance 2. One of the best games to come out during the late nineties.

For those of you who do not know, the Jagged Alliance series has been around since 1991. You play as a group of mercenaries, which you can either chose from a list or create from scratch, and you usually must overthrow some evil dictator through guerrilla warfare and mindcrushingly terrible puns and catch phrases.
Jagged Alliance is known for two things, it's amazing strategic turn based gameplay and it's sense of humor.
It's kind of got a "losing is fun" feel because dying is usually hilarious

.

So I'm going to begin a Let's Play. I'm looking for 2-5 forum members who wish to create a character in game. You do not have to choose to follow the story line, you can create an objective of your own if you please.

I should also tell you I'm running with several mods for realism/gun purposes. I'm running the following mods.

IOV, Formerly known as "The cosplay mod". Cosplay means something else entirely in Russia, where most of the mod developers live. It adds hundreds of firearms and the MOLLE style vest system.

1.13 This mod adds tons of bugfixes, features, and nifty items/inventory system modifiers. Made the game ten times more fun.

HAM 3.5 This mods tweaks just about everything to do with all the NPCs and Player Characters. It makes combat much more realistic, allowing you to use strategies like covering fire, suppresive fire, and other such types of attack with great affect.

STOMP 1.0 This mod gives more personality traits and "Skills" to mercs. Mercs can now have "Classes" such as machine gunner, sniper, technician, etc. Depending on the class they get bonuses to certain skills.

Eh, I read the strategy guide. Pretty boring. And I was turned off when you had optional quests to kill

Which seemed rather terrible since I played the original Jagged Alliance and it kept itself rather seriously. I didn't really got a handle of the combat though. :-\

The whole plot of Jagged Alliance 1 is ten times less likely then JA2, and the whole "bugs" thing is entirely optional. You can play in "Realistic" or "Sci fi" mode. I've never played scifi and have no intentions of doing so now.

Also

"Jagged Alliance"
"Taking itself fairly seriously"

Never did get the impression that the series took itself seriously...

And this STOMP, it intrigues me...

Lawl, yeah, I too found that Jagged Alliance 1 took itself way more seriously, what with the whole assembling a team with a crazed russian who doesn't speak English, a mafia goomba, a mechanic who can't swim, and a sadistic madman who looks like Gordon Freeman thing.

That's great, but I warn you. Spec ops is a brutally effective tactic in Jagged Alliance 2. However effective as it may be, when something goes wrong it usually goes wrong big. Just a warning. Lol.

Now all I need is 1-3 more players.

Sure, I'll join.

Haven't played JA2, although it's on my list of games to pick up and play eventually.

Anyway:

Full Name: Ryan Stalwart

Nickname: Irontooth

Gender: Male

Firearm: Machine Gun (Probably assault rifle at first, but the bigger the better)

Specialization: Machine Gun

That work?

Oh this will be fun. We can only hold two more members, I'll be accompanying your squad as a mechanic marksman. I'll fix your guns and anything else that needs doing, and act as a pack mule.

If I don't get two more members by this time tomorrow we will begin the game with 4 people.

Name: Anya Snow

Nick: Snow Drifter

Gender: female

favorite firearm: biggest, baddest sniper rifle available

Specialization: long range marksmanship

When the buddy next to you falls to the ground suddenly with a bullet hole through his chest. Your hair raises and you feel that chill like ice running down your back. Unable to find where the shot came from, knowing they are next. That is what my enemies feel as I target them next.

never played either game but I'll be sure to read and comment if you think this is a good idea for a character.

That'll do just fine. Snipers are key elements in Jagged Alliance, especially for larger battles.

I'm surprised more people didn't choose sniper, it's the most common fantasy for people military wise. If I had a nickel for everyone with a sniper fetish I would buy Japan just to sink the damn island.

actually I'm not overly into snipers myself, hate the god damn things in FPS's. I'm more of a SMG person, love playing close quarters in FPS's. I chose sniper because you lacked one.

Strange, I always dreamed of being the Heavy Weapons Guy....But wielding a Shotgun and going all Space Marine on the Queen's Army is also cool.

To be honest. A shotgun is a pretty devastating weapon, more so than video games would let us believe. the effective range of a typical shotgun is much more effective further than the 20-40 feet portrayed in games. With the recent advances in the design of military shotguns, I'd rather have one of those than a LMG. (in general. a LMG certainly has it's place in the battlefield.)

one of the games that i have played that really showed the dominance of the shotgun was fallout tactics. (weapons like the panzor jackhammer) big clip, rapid fire, nice range, crazy damage.
