Please god, Toady, add the Celsius scale to the game!
« on: March 23, 2010, 02:23:00 pm »

Something in the inti.txt that would change the Fahrenheit scale to Celsius. Being Canadian, and also part of the whole rest of the world I think it would be a good idea. I do know the formula to change Fahrenheit to Celsius, but it's annoying to have to do the equation every time I want to know what the temperature is.

Even being American, I can say the scale could probably use a little reworking...  As I understand it, 0 on the scale we are currently using is roughly -5000 Kelvin... which means that temperatures can go below Absolute Zero... which means it, um, isn't very Absolute anymore, now is it?

Being as most Americans who get deep enough into DF to care about temperatures are probably the sort of people who worry about exact realistic melting points, which are generally the sort of people who are used to Celsius, anyway.

But I like the current temperature scale.

Its in Urists.

There are temperature conversions.

Last time temperature was discussed, the discussion stabilized at recognizing that the game ought to be able to make sense of Celsius, Kelvin, Fahrenheit (and maybe Urist too) wherever temperature is used in the raws.

A simple Suggestions search for Celsius turned up this thread, where this exact idea already got 200 posts' worth of discussion.  Feel free to rehash it here though.

Seeing as the scale starts at 0 right now, Kelvin seems like a more viable choice than Celsius. Not sure if it's worth the coding time to make the scale recognize different measurement units. It'd certainly be a fertile breeding ground for bugs

You say that like it would be a bad thing for creatures to exist at 10,000 degrees!

Speaking of temperatures, though, is it just me, or does Adamantine's boiling point strike you as laughable?

As it stands now, Adamantine is practically the definition of Unobtanium, as its melting point is impossibly high, and its strength to weight ratio is absurd, it is theoretically capable of being made into a submarine that could sail through the outer layers of the sun like an ocean.  Given the lack of convection in this game, that submarine could even be manned.

Does no one ever bother to check the thread I spent a lot of time making....

Dwarf Temp Tool This tool allows you to convert Kelvin, Fahrenheit and even the Celsius temperature scale to the dwarf fortress units of temperature.

Just put in the temperature you want in ANY unit and it gives you the answer.

The urist is fine and we do not need to waste programming time to change it.

Personally I'd prefer the Delisle scale, being that it has water boiling at 0 degrees and freezing at 150 :)
