The Story of Degeliden
« on: March 23, 2010, 12:01:45 pm »

So, while waiting for the new version, I decided to run a fortress and record the happenings in there. This thread will contain all the events of the Degeliden.

For a fun I decided to embark in 5*5 flat location, with hidden magma pipe and brook. My starting seven consists of one farmer, who is my trader and brewer, and six miners. The only items I took with them were six picks, one battle axe (for woodcutting purpose), three pig tail ropes, two war dogs, one cat, a bit of seed and lots of food and drink.

I'm using couple of mods. First of all I modded Orcs to the game, though they should appear rather late and removed the tag that made them avoid traps. Also, I'm able to smelt wooden objects to charcoal, though with magma that doubly should be in much of use. I also added the ability to smelt flux from bones, to help with steel production. Lastly, I'm using Molten Rocks mod, so more magma proof stones for me to use.

I have Weather and economy turned off, to make a bit better FPS.

My plan is to only mine with the starting seven and farm, nothing else. The first immigrants will then be tasked to different jobs (masonry, carpentry, stonecrafting and so on). My starting seven won't do any of these jobs, and when I have enough immigrants my starting farmer will be promoted as full time broker/manager and perhaps bookkeeper. The bookkeeper part is not yet decided, perhaps one immigrant gets that position.

I'll keep posting regulary and will include pics when my fortress has been at least a bit developed.

First update. At this point the fortress is going late autumn of the first year.

The beginning has been running smoothly. I have been able to get my farming and brewery running, although without wood I have not been able to produce barrels and thus brewing has required a bit micromanagement. Luckily I embarked with lots of alcohol, so it has not been a problem yet.

My miners have completed workshop areas for food industry, trading goods industry, furniture industry and metal industry. Each areas include workshop areas in one z-level, and stockpiles one level up and/or down. The actual workshops has not been built yet, though, but that's going to be fixed with my first immigrants.

I have also discovered magma pipe, though that means I have only got the warning messages about warm stones. Haven't yet tried to discover the actual pipe, as I'm waiting to get floodgates and mechanisms ready to block the area when necessary. The pipe is actually very close to my embarking point, and thus caused some redesigning. But on the other hands, that means I don't have to get the magma from across the map, which will be a good thing for FPS and to the time it takes to get my reservois under workshops filled.

Meeting area is ready, and as soon as possible I will turn it to dining room as well. There was a lot magnetite ore right where I dug the dining room, so I was very lucky.

Currently my miners are digging my Study/Dining Room level and bedrooms. So far I have designated over 60 bedrooms to be dug, so those should be enough for some time.

I have had couple of problems as well. The map contains group of deers, which were able to enter my fortress and interrupted my dwarves for some time. It took some work to drive them out by drafting my miners. Also, as I have dug out a lot of stones, ores and gems, my fortress wealth has attracted couple of thieves. So far, three has been killed by temporary drafted miner, and one has been able to escape with my Pig Tail Rope. No big loose, though.

First caravan and liaison arrived, but there was nothing I could do with them as I don't have even depot built. That will be soon fixed.

First immigrant wave just came, and now I'm able to get my fortress running properly. Seven migrants, of which one well be Woodcutter, one mechanic, two masons, one butcher/tanner, one carpenter and one stone crafter.

I'll post some pictures when I get from work.

Sounds fun. can you name a miner after me named Johann

Sure. Is either one of those who has killed thief okay?
By the way, it looks like one of kobold was killed by my war dog, as only two of my miners has killed anything, and there is three dead kobolds in my refuse pile...

And here are the pics of my fortress. All the pics are from the moment I saved yesterday.

Floor Z-1. This is the first level underground, and the only soil floor. So far containing only my farm and temporary weapon stockpile (wanted to get everything underground).
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Floor Z-2.  This is one of my stockpile floors. So far it only has food stockpile (top of the screen), wood stockpile (bottom centre of the screen) and bone gem stockpile (right side of the wood stockpile)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Floor Z-3, also known as "Workshop level". This is where all my workshops will go, and at this moment I have dug food workshop area (right top of the main stairway, four 3*6 rooms connected to five tiles wide hallway), metal workshop area (right from food area), Furniture area (on the screen under the stairway) and trade goods workshop area (right from the furniture area). As can be seen from the unfinished part of the metal workshop area, the magma pipe should be somewhere top left part of the workshop area.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Floor Z-4. My second stockpile floor. This floor also contains soon-to-be magma reservois for my magma workshops. Not connected to magma yet though. So far there is only Bone stockpile (connected to food workshops), furniture stockpile (connected to furniture workshops) and finished goods stockpile right under the trade goods workshops.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Floor Z-5. Dining room / meeting hall. Right side of the room is full of magnetite.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Floor Z-6. The floor containing studies and dining rooms for nobles. All the rooms are 7*7 at size, and there is two tiles between each room, to maximize the result of later engravings.
I had to leave one room for later digging as I got warning messages about warmth. I'll see what I will do when I actually discover the magma
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Z-7. Bedrooms. Contains 60 small 3*3 rooms for my labors and four 7*7 rooms for nobles. Partially dug, and I will designate more for digging when necessary. Again, all rooms have two tiles wide wall between for purpose of engraving.

4 Timber 48, year 1

Finally the basic workshops are ready! Starting seven, as they are known in Degeliden, as been anxiously waiting beds, barrels, tables and chairs to make the fortress more comfortable place to live. As none of them had any skills to make those furnitures, First immigrants who arrived were greeted in joy. As soon as the celebrations were over the new faces were assigned the most important task so known in Degeliden: to create furniture!

The arrival of butcher also brought smile to faces of some. Finally there was some change to the food supplies they had.

11th Timber 48, year 1

What could be the most horrible things to happen to Degeliden? The theft of Battle Axe! The new woodcutter Ablel Geshudoltar noticed this tragic thing when she was supposed to begin her work to produce wood logs for carpenter. This means no barrels, beds or bins before the next caravan arrives that sells axes. And that won't be before next summer, as elves are known to shun cutting wood and thus hoping them to bring axe for that purpose is too much to be asked. So, Degeliden must survive without wood to the arrival of human caravan at the summer of 49.

As soon as the news of theft got around the fortress, the morale was dropping. Almost year to be slept in dirt? That could be lethal for the sanity of some.

25th Timber 48, year 1.

The trading depot is finally finished, and has brought some hope among the population of Degeliden. But why in Armok's sake did Fath Kibducim used red kaolinite? Was the color of choose some demonstration of opinions? Kibducim refused to comment the reasons behind the selection.

19th Moonstone 48, year 1

Rigoth Tosidethram, the fortress mechanic, has finally finished her project of constructing magma proof floodgate system linked to levers. Now the miners can finally return their work of finding the magma.

21st Moonstone 48, year 1

The magma has been discovered! The discovery was made by Morul Momuzotung when she accidentally dug the wall separating the pipe from the fortress. The miners were lucky as all of them were able to escape behind the floodgate which was shut before the magma was able to spread too much

10th Opal 48, year 1

Expedition leader has announced all farming to be halted. Lokum Udeshlogem, the leader, faced huge disagreement from fellow dwarfs, but he had made his final decision. The reasons he gave were in the fact that all those plump helmets were filling the barrels, which would leave none for brewing purpose. If there wasn't going to be any brewing soon enough, the fortress would run out of alcohol, and thus would force everybody to drink water. This could result catastrophic drop of morale, and thus made the decision unavoidable. The seven dwarfs who came to fortress as migrants were already wondering if the decision to leave their homes to live in Degeliden was correct decision after all.

14th Opal 48, year 1

During harsh times even small things may have positive effects. This old saying was proven in fortress of Degeliden when dining room was finally ready to use. After all the drawbacks the dwarfs had endured when struggling to survive, this small event raised the general morale in the fortress. Lokum Udeshlogem was especially relieved this as he had already hard time to keep the mood of everybody at content level. Hopefully everything would turn out well after all.

16th Opal 48, year 1

The job of leader is not always the easiest one, especially if you are the leader of fortress like Degeliden. Even though the masons already had their hands full of building furnitures, Lokum Udeshlogem ordered the construction of temporary wall around the entrance of the fortress above the ground. Against all the tradition the wall would be build from rough stones instead of blocks, which surprised many. But the need for the wall as soon as possible was high, as there was no way to tell when either goblins or kobolds would try the defense of the fortress again. And since the defense didn't even exists, the result would be chaotic.

So the orders were give to Fath Kibducim and Iton Erithostuk to build wall around the entrance stairs, trading depot and refuse stockpile as soon as possible, only to leave small gap allowing wagons to enter the depot and build bridge to that gap. At the same time the mechanic was ordered to build a link between the new bridge and lever, which would allow the complete seal of the fortress in case of emergency.

28th Opal 48, year 1

The miner team has finally finished stockpiles for ores, bars and metal furnitures over the forge and smelter area. Sadly, the original plans had to be thrown to magma due the recently discovered magma pipe was interrupting the original plans, and new plans had to be approved by the leader. But after all the planning and digging, the stockpiles has finally been finished and the storing of ores can begin. What made this especially worthy of celebration was that some ore was in the area which would be covered by magma when all the reservois would be filled. Hopefully soon the magma can be unleashed and the final preparations for metal industry can begin.

11th Obsidian 48, year 1

Lokum Udeshlogem was excited to announce that the fortress could finally be called safe, as both Fath Kibducim and Iton Erithostuk had finished the constructions of wall and bridge, Rigoth Tosidethram linked the bridge to lever, and both war dogs were chained next to the only entrance inside the walls.

14th Granite 49, year 2

The temporal wall has already proved its worth. Two times there has been thief trying to sneak inside the fortress, both times the dogs guarding the entrance were able to detect the thief and drive it away. What could have happened if there weren't anything protecting the entrance?

15th Granite 49, year 2

It's not known when elves has received as warm welcome as the traders from Miraenina received. In normal circumstances these two elves probably wouldn't have permitted even to enter the fortress perimeters, but desperate times require desperate actions, and the wood logs brought by this caravan were just too valuable to refuse. At first Udeshlogem was reluctant to meet the elves, but after some pressure from his fellow dwarfs, he finally met the traders and traded some crafts made from stones to 14 wood logs. The smiles of everybody was worth of putting the hatred against elves behind, and so the logs were brought underground.

But even though the logs were giving slight relieve to the pressure of wooden furniture, the heaviest task for Udeshlogem was to decide where the logs were going to be used. 14 logs would mean just enough beds to everybody, but on the other hands barrels and bins were highly required. This meant that either he would order the carpenter to construct 14 beds or seven bins and seven barrels. No less that 14 beds were worth of constructing, as less than that would but some dwarfs in different situation than the rest, and there was no quarantee that it would not end in slaughter.

After some consideration Udeshlogem had made his decision and gave Bim Bakustmafol order to construct bed for every dwarf. The tears of joy were running from the corner of eyes of the carpenter as she begun to fulfill the order. No more sleeping on dirt.

18th Granite 49, year 2

Because of the gratitude towards Udeshlogem and his decision to construct beds from the only logs, the citizens of Degeliden prepared big surprise to him: they hurried the construction of private study and dining room for his use only. Both rooms were huge, and both had table and chair in them. In study there also were armor stand and weapon rack, and in dining room there was two coffers for his personal use.

22nd Slate 49, year 2

The news of another group of migrants arrived right before the migrants themselves. And the news contained something that everybody had been secretly hoped for: among the migrants there were one with skills of woodcutting, and she was bringing her own axe with her!

As the citizens of Degeliden rushed to the entrance to meet the migrants they were shocked by the number of them. Eighteen migrants in total were approaching the bridge. Udeshlogem ordered all the migrants to form a line in front of his office with the intention of interviewing every single one of them to get to know their skills and which jobs would be the most fit to each one.

It took nearly the whole day to get all the necessary information written down and jobs ordered. Among the migrants there was the woodcutter, two brewers and two farmers, which were given the Udeshlogem's earlier job to produce food and alcohol to fortress, one hunter who was ordered to fill the position of marksdwarf, one blacksmith, one dwarf who had skills for making armors from metals, two smelters, one leather worker and seven peasants.

But the wave of migrants brought new problem to Degeliden: the number of citizens required someone to take the role of sheriff to keep up the order in the fortress. And it seemed to be Udeshlogem's lucky day, as when he announced the position of sheriff open, one of the newly arrived peasant informed to be filling to take the position and he even possessed enough skill to do the job. And thus, Udil Akathzuglar, peasant who arrived to Degeliden at spring of year 49, was promoted to the sheriff, and was promised to proper working and bed rooms as well as personal dining room.

11th Felsite 49, year 2

The day had brought both good and bad to Udeshlogem's life. On the positive side he was finally able to announce that the first fourteen bedrooms were ready to be assigned. As the leader of the fortress, he was in charge of assigning, and decided to go with "first come, first get" principle. And that meant that both the founders of the fortress as the members of first migrant wave was assigned bedrooms. Over year had Degelide existed, and for the first time the citizens, or at least some of them, were able to sleep in proper beds. The decision caused some general suspicion, but Udeshlogem promised that more beds were in production queue among bins and barrels, so soon enough everyone should own personal bedroom. In the end everyone went back to their works with content mind, though few wondered how long the production would take.

But the day brought some bad things as well. Angry because the loss of job as the new woodcutter had taken it from her, the former woodcutter Ablel Geshudoltar wanted a meeting with Udeshlogem. Geshudoltar was unhappy because the only job he had given was give to someone else, nevertheless the new woodcutter was more proficient than she and that work would done faster this way. After some discussion the two got to compromise: the new woodcutter continued what she was doing and Geshudoltar was give the position of second carpenter. Now, as the flow of logs was secure, there was demand for another carpenter to fill all those long due orders of barrels, beds, bins and buckets. And so the meeting was ended with both end happy about the result of it.

20th Felsite 49, year 2

One of the founders of Degeliden, Thikut Luslemeral, has been acting strangely lately. He has avoided the company of other dwarves, spending all his spare time in his room making sketches of something. Finally, during the month of Felsite, he left his room and claimed one of the masonries, and begun furiously working on something. Others tried to find out what it was, but Luslemeral turned everyone away from the doors of masonry he had claimed.

24th Felsite 49, year 2

After four days of hard work, Luslemeral finally left the masonry to announce the finish of his construction. Everybody gathered around the masonry to see what he had been working on so secretly, anxious to see what had been so important to slow down the other stone projects.
It turned out to be a millstone made from gypsum and jet, and Luslemeral called the creation Lisiduvar Kathildebish, Clashleslulls the Wet Spasm. Everybody stared the millstone in disbelief. This was that so special and secret project Luslemeral had been working? There even were no mills around! Luslemeral claimed that in some day this great construction of his would be made in great use, and in the end would serve the fortress well. Hardly anyone believed this, and in disappointment everybody returned to their work.

Can't continue this fort, as it seems that I accidentally abandoned when I quited yesterday instead of saving. And I didn't keep any backups.  :-[ :'(

Perhaps I will start new story fort, after turning on autosaving and backuping, and have found interesting location...
