Dream play experience of DF
« on: March 22, 2010, 12:31:05 pm »

This is my dream play experience with Dwarf Fortress:

I just started new fortress. I have a few templates of early living area and workshop layout. I use them to quick designate my best practice early fortress. Watching my miners taking care od digging, I do some profession management. I see list of dwarves with their attributes. I load my profession template and see proposals of dwarf assignments with respect to their personalities. I decide who is who.
Notification appeared - food stock dropped below 10, it is time to react. Looking on scheme map of my fortress, I see long arrow pointing from plant stockpile to kitchen. Also I see another notification about cluttered kitchen. I made some arrangements to solve that.
Now, when basic workshops are set up and running, it is time to make something usefull. Looking to my stocks I see we have a lot of gems. I choose yellow jasper and raise new task from here - encrust furniture. Also I love encrust some goods so I choose my 99 clear glass gems and order all of them for this
Meanwhile, another notification: a goblin snatcher. I clicked "send nearest squad there" and hopefully it is solved
All the time I see and work with my fortress in beautiful 3D rendered enviroment. I feel relaxed and thinking about some monuments I could erect.

DREAM COMING TRUE
I present here my outlook on management pack of utilities to fully utilize the power of Dwarf Fortress

I suppose it should cover areas below. In each area I list possible candidates
Dwarf management - profession management, notifications like "this dwarf in strange mood is going to be mad"
  • Dwarf Therapist + filter scripts
  • (hopefully notification will arise in pydfhack or therapist)

Better graphical representation - tileset or visualization to make it more real
  • StoneSense
  • Khazad

Fortress management - like designation from templates, mass digging
  • PerfectWorld gen
  • Design templates in BMP -> ChromaFort -> QuickFort
  • Vein digger of dfhack
  • (Future releases of StoneSense)
  • Terragen

As for today - pack in action (40d19.2)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
StoneSense follows dwarf fortress moves and Dwarf Therapist refresh dwarves beautifully (refresh is set off on picture).

First thing: There is an issue running two tools using DFHack library, they didn't start at all or with error.

So there are two screenshots with above mentioned tools

DF + Dwarf Therapist + DFHack

Maybe an collection of optional tilesets? No offence but personally I hate that the tiles are not square. I would vote for MayDays graphicset.

Quick correction - 'Stonesense,' not 'SenseStone.' I'd also reccommend Visual Fortress, though I preferred v0.8 to v0.801.

No, visual fortress is just a terrain/construction render, I believe.

I'd second that. MayDay's is my favorite tileset. It's the easiest to read and work with.

Graphics packs are great for those who're not used to roguelikes or have colourblindness, but personally I love the vanilla graphics. Although I'm torn between that and the 'other' colour scheme.

As for visualisers, I almost never build above ground, so they're kind of wasted on me.

Personally, StoneSense is for me that "another graphics set"

As for viz, what about Khazad? is it of any use for you? I think it is usable when you look for veins. See:

I concur on StoneSense. Whilst it is without a doubt a beautiful visualiser and one of the truely impressive projects to emerge from the forum, to me it's just an isometric graphics pack.

As for Khazad, there's no support for d19, which is what I'm using. Therefore, no good for me.

I understand fully

Same here, same here. I test it on plain d40

update:
new dfhack made it possibly to run all three together:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

so we now have visualization + job management
now I am looking for a "sims-tool" or sims councilor. It means: to know more about my dwarves, like what they like, what they need

I'd say square tileset (ascii one) is a must if you want to make ultimate-pack. Non-square tiles make everything in game look weirdly stretched.
