You know, the whole "what is cheating" thing would die, if only people would stop commenting on it... If you hate it so much, and want the conversation to die, why do you keep ressurecting the conversation?

Still, I can't help but be amazed and amused at how much Serious Business resulted from asking, "So using an exploit is fine only when it corrects a bug is what you're saying, correct?"

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I finally got sieged by a large force, so I had a bunch of extra caged goblins. I dumped a whole stack on the pillar, and was surprised by the results. With the extra goblins, the archers fire way more often. I need more melters! On the other hand, there's also a lot more unwanted kills. This really is a goblins-to-adamantine converter. :P

It's also a really convenient miasma generator. The field of smelters is always bathed in a soft, comforting cloud of miasma.

Maybe you should counter it with a little air-freshener in the form of a near-smelter waterfall?  Those uncontrolled miasmas can really do a number on happiness, especially if you have large numbers of dwarves collecting bolts.  One pet donkey dying of old age can trigger a nasty tantrum spiral in that state.

No, I have a Legendary +5 brewer and all my dwarves are high on ≡dwarven ale biscuits≡. I regularly draft/undraft On Break civilians without consequence, and when I deliberately spilled magma into the room containing literally dozens of pets, I don't think anyone even dipped below Ecstatic.

Boozecooking with a legendary brewer is great, because you don't need a good cook to get good results, and the thoughts "Had a wonderful meal", "Had a truly decadent meal", and "Had a truly decadent drink", etc., all stack.

Meanwhile, the megaproject is proceeding nicely. I had been afraid that it would be just an extravagant use of somewhere around the normal 600 adamantine, but it is shaping up to take much more than that. I'm also diverting some to make all-masterpiece adamantine plate armor for my champions.

WRT your miasma "problem", though it seems you (and your dwarfs) don't mind so much; depending on the location maybe you could channel a shaft to the surface directly above the pillar and place a grate or glass window at the very top, would that not stop miasma from being produced?

(I use the same method for my farms, butchers, kitchens etc)

I wonder if you could make it more efficient by making several stacks of archers to work in paralel? Say, three gobblins in three separate lone pillars, and three archer stacks.
If you put them in a diagonal and orthogonal layout (think about the chess queen) from each archer, it could even make each archer stack fire at the three gobblins for each loop of your walker/repeater.

A fast enough gobblin in a looping escape repeater (refer to the wiki) could operate it for full automation too...

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

Yeah - I eventually did that, just because the cloud makes it hard to see things. You can even floor it over with a constructed floor.

Probably. The benefit probably isn't worth the extra complication though.

No it wouldn't - the archers would shoot at the goblin! You could probably use a tame animal of some sort though.

You could just "door off" the other sides of the goblin and repeat the setup in different directions, rather than create several more independent ranges.  Saves on goblins.

I think that what Djohaal is suggesting is to make it so that all the goblins are visible from the same point, with the doors open at different times, so that the same number of archers get more opportunities to shoot. Your way would require more archers.

Ah, I thought he was talking about entirely separate systems, to get more marksdwarves into the mix.

Seems a bit odd that the marksdwarves don't already get a full opportunity to shoot stuff in the current system...

They can't shoot when the doors are closed, and they have to be closed most of the time. Having multiple goblin-platforms could theoretically help this.

In other news: In the course of building the machinery that is necessary to my mega-project, I have discovered that there is no meaningful limit to the number of water wheels that can be powered by the output of a single screw pump. It's certainly greater than 40, and I'd guess that the one pump could power several hundred wheels without much trouble. Unfortunately, I'm short on wood. I hope the Elves bring some.
