I shall be a mason or stonecrafter!  Or maybe mechanic...something of that sort.

(P.S. I seem to tend to write a lot about insignificant things, I anybody is bothered by long updates were not much happens, tell me so I can try to focus on bigger events)

There were seven of us that day, I, that is Arucard, accepting the role of leader and more importantly, miner. I bring along a more experience miner than I, Darkness, who has skill with metalworking as well. Willsonns our woodworker, Gnooble the mason and craftsdwarf, Supercharazad a food/drink specialist, Azulth who claims to have various management related skills (I think he's just looking for a way out of doing any real work), and finally Calhoun, who shall serve as our main protection with wrestling skill and a weathered crossbow strapped to his back.

But I'm jumping ahead, like all stories I must begin at the beginning. I was content enough simply digging channels, mining ores, and carving hallways at the old mountainhomes. Then our new "leader" came into power, it was decided the mountainhomes should strike fear in our enemies  and fellow dwarf alike. A group of us were quickly gathered up and ordered to this area in order to establish what may become the new capital for our society. I'm a little skeptical since  I heard over a dozen such expeditions had set out before us, nevertheless our alternative was the hammer.

The area we arrive in seems harmless enough at first glance, but I get that feeling like an underlying evil is just waiting to spring out at us any chance it gets. Bad enough our wagon breaks down within yards of a seemingly bottomless chasm, I can hear all manner of horrible things screeching and clawing around down there.

We have come to an agreement as a group that leadership will be a shared responsibility and, as such I have one year in charge of our outpost named ominously Dyebraves. Our group name, the Silence of Graves is no better. But I won't let that influence me, first we need to make some shelter and set up food/booze production. We'll worry about the rest as it comes, "all right boys (and girls?), let's get this debacle under way!"

Before even digging out an entrance I notice something glinting in the dull sunlight above us. There are exposed walls of native aluminum and copper right over our heads! While fortunate, it begs the question why have they never been seen before? I'm going to attempt in removing them before we have cause to find out.

=Granite 5, y.54=
I thought it prudent to assign a war dog to Calhoun our marksdwarf since he is all alone in protecting us, luckily our noble benefactors saw fit to supply us with at least one war dog. Perhaps they didn't just send us here to our death. We have successfully extracted the aluminum and copper, plus found more, why does this still give me an uneasy feeling. I can hear the sickening sounds of human-size batwings fluttering from the chasm. Is it only a matter of time until they realize there is a buffett of tender, helpless dwarves awaiting slaughter just above?  Maybe I just need a drink.

=Granite 18, y.54=
Damn! I knew it! One of those "Batmen" got out and killed our war dog. Or maybe it was that cave spider that bit one of our kittens? There is web near the corpse. Only we may bite our kittens! I believe Calhoun has only one bolt also, this could be trouble, make that shot count!

=Granite 22, y.54=
Perhaps I should be grateful it's only our pets falling to such misery, but I feel that the beasts are only toying with us. Now a kitten has been entangled in a web. Cave swallowmen, Naked  Moledogs, and Troglodyte's seem to be moving in on her. I doubt there is any hope to save the poor creature at this point. Perhaps the same goes for all of us, yet I continue to dig, I can't think of anything else. We must try to get inside of the mountain, we will be safe under the rock. I utter a prayer to Solon the Defense of Steam, and continue digging.

=Granite 25, y.54=
I return to the surface to find Calhoun, previously moping about his war dog being killed, standin in a pool of blood. "What Happened here!?" I shout, worried he might have done something to himself. A blank stare is what I recieved back, looking down I see a sturdy dwarven boot implanted defiantly into the skull of a batman corpse. "I see," I began, but it seems the silence spoke volumes I could not. I nodded and returned to my tunnel. *It should be noted, Calhoun indeed had only a single bolt, and reveled in the slaughter of the batman. No doubt it was the same creature that took the war dog from him. The vomit found on the ground also suggests he took his time in the kill, perhaps purposefully delaying the deathblow to maximize suffering.*

=Slate 1, y.54=
Today I heard a strange horn-like sound I've never heard before. One of the others turned sheet white hearing and I heard him say something under his breath. I couldn't quite make it out, something like telefints? I don't know, whatever these telefints are they must be dangerous, let's hope they keep their distance.

+=Supplement=+
what a resourceful kitty we have! Somehow she managed to break free of the webs, escape the hordes of monsterous creatures, and return to the settlement. Perhaps even killing a mountain goat along the way for sustinance! (though that may have been there before) I'm starting to think the nine lives thing is more than just a joke. We've dug the main tunnel out, but no rooms are finished yet. I feel as if I'm about to fall over right here and pass out on the cavern floor. I'll try and find a nice corner to set myself against, until we get some decent beds made. With the descovery of native copper and aluminum, I have to think that the nobles may have had an idea what they were doing after all. Though, it also may just be they sent out so many, one or two were bound to find something. In any case, I'm turning in for the night and hopefully  when I awake, the same calm will surround me as does now.

Brilliant.
Count me in. I don't think I'm novice, but definitely probably maybe moderately skilled.

Good enough, welcome Mr. 8.
I did forget to mention, the dwarven economy is turned off for me, but everyone else will have to change it in their own ini I think. So when it's your turn find [ECONOMY] in your raws and make sure it's NO. This is the only thing I've changed about the game other than using graphics.

Not bad, Can't wait to hear more. Though i must admit I'm a bit worried about my Dwarf.

Hmmmm....

From the journal of Calhoun, Year 54:
The 7th of Granite,
Assigned a War Dog recently,a strange dog. It's senses are keen, yet it seems distracted by something. I feel better having another set of eyes, at the very least. I'm not sure what all is out here, but that Chasm is full of dangers, I'm certain. Worse yet, we don't have any more bolts than what I already carry. Once they are gone, I'm a distraction at bet.

The 18th of Granite,
The dog is dead. I hadn't enough time to get really attached, and yet, It still hurts. That dog was my only friend out here, I rarely see the others for more than a passing glance. A terrible creature, a "Batman" as i've heard some others speak of it, Rose up out of the chasm and went straight for his neck. Poor dog never had a chance. Strange however, was that a number of cave spiders came and quickly covered the area in their web.

The 26th of Granite,
Yesterday was great, I got revenge. I don't remember much, I must have gotten myself so worked up. I killed it, I killed the Batman that killed my dog. I don't know how many are in that chasm, but I know this was the same one. At a price though, I have a single bolt remaining.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

Sorry, I know I'm taking too long, just had issues and frustration. I've changed the graphics because I don't like partial graphic/partial ascii, so that's why it looks different if anyone wonders. On to business:

=Slate 27, y.54=
Following the death of another puppy to yet another Batman I've designated a half-finished dining room as a temporary meeting area. Most of the animals (the unclaimed ones) have moved inside now. Additionally all of our supplies have been placed into temporary stockpiles closer to the fort entrance, we should have no
reason to come near the damnable chasm again. That is, until we can confidently dispose of these hellish batmen. It's been suggested to me to find a source of magma and flood the chasm with it. While the thought makes me smile to say the least, we must at least wait until more marksdwarves are available. I can't wait to pick these bastards out of the sky while they flee their fire flooded death chamber.

=Felsite 27, y.54=
Due to an oversight in mining designation, we have gotten dangerously low on food supplies. I have redirected all attention on digging out an area for the farms, I just hope those little shrooms pop up before we all go mad with hunger. Well, we've plenty of booze left so I think we'll be fine.

=Hematite 5, y.54=
These damn trumpeting sounds are getting louder. The earth is shaking all around us, I believe those Hellefints are getting closer. Hopefully they are less aggressive than a Batman, or we could be in considerable trouble. I caught a breif glimpse of one today, and they are large enough to devour at least three dwarves at once! I'll need a plan if we are to survive an assault by these creatures. I decided to give our only free hands, Azulth, the task of crafting mechanisms for the purpose of creating traps. I can only hope the size of these creatures in no way reflects their intelligence. Hell, if we're really lucky maybe they will end up in battle against the beasts that have plagued us so far, though I won't bet my beard on it.

=Hematite 7, y.54=
It seems I must fully retract my statements about the monarchy being clueless. Today we struck adamantine! Truly the workings of the higher class are more advanced than I realized, even as a miner I had no clue we would stumble across something so lucky! Surely we will become the envy of the mounainhomes when word of this reaches them.

=Malachite 16, y.54=
The food stocks are rising slowly, but steadily, not much else happening. I think, for the moment at least, we are safe from the elephants and various beasts of the chasm. The workshop floor is nearing completion and I can't wait to see what Darkness can make from this admantine, though we should probably save some for  later on, just in case. Anyway, the next step is to set up some crafting and make a depot so we can hopefully get some trading set up. That is, assuming anyone is fool enough to venture out here for purposes of trade in the first place. No, I'm sure our benevolent rulers will send someone to assist us...

Right?

=Galena 20, y.54=
Someone was shouting about a kitten gone missing, I checked around but couldn't find anything. In my gut, I feel as though the chasm devils are to blame, are they really becoming so bold as to snatch a tiny kitten right from under our noses? Is it possible it has simply run off? No, I can feel it in my bones, the animal is dead. Summer is coming to a close and we are no nearer to setting up trade, nor attracting any potential immigrants. I feel as if I'm letting everyone down, what can I do to set things right?! At the very least food/drink supply is stabilizing, and some workshops are being constructed. I guess I could call that progress, but my pessimism seems to overwhelm.

=Limestone 16, y.54=
An announcement horn sounds from the southwest, a caravan has arrived with the liaison from the mountainhomes! Unfortunately, it seems they will need to contend with a pack of troglodytes as well as a troupe of elephants in order to approach the fort. We still have barely anything to trade and I'd be willing to part with some of our booze if the price is right. No use in considering the possibilities if the caravan is to become a smear across the plain, so we'll wait until it's more evident they will actually make it to us.

the elephants are on the next level down, just to the NE there

=Limestone 24, y.54=
The depot is constructed, and shortly before we had a visit from a kobold thief. He didn't get anything, as there is nothing to really take, but it is a sign of things to come. Now it is up to the merchants to make it alive to our newly constructed depot, good luck brothers.

=Limestone 27, y.54=
The idiot kobold decided to return and was quickly dispatched completely decimated by the acceptional warrior, Calhoun. Also, our merchants have made it safely to the entrance! Here's hoping they have something we can use.

=Supplement=
Unfortunately the bastards brought barely anything, plus started to pull attitude with Azulth with what we offered! We had to give them a couple barrels of wine just to shut them up! Too bad we can't really afford to lose their business in the future. All we got were a couple helpings of meat, some leather, seeds, and some random junk. Still no more immigrants, but the fort is moving steadily along. I'm also planning to have Darkness forge an adamantine plate mail for Calhoun, that should make him feel much better! Well, we've lasted this long, I suppose we have no choice but to continue on. In the end, maybe we will come out of this with our skins in-tact, sure, and maybe Dwarf and carp could live together in peace and harmony.

Alright, I'll hold off on the Adman. I started extracting the strands, so I'll just leave them like that for now. But there are still 9 nuggets waiting to be picked up just on one floor, I assume there's more beneath. Guess I'll give Calhoun copper armor.

Yes, we don't want to release the HFS too early, now do we? We want at least a standing army prior to that.
