Diing from thirst although stocks are full?
« on: March 19, 2010, 07:47:33 pm »

Hello there,

why do I have some dwarfs that die from thirst although my stocks are full of ale and wine and beer and I have a large sub-surface water supply and there is nothing preventing the dwarfs from getting to the desired drinks? How can this happen?

Thanks

Hendrik

Is it possible you have (or had) injured Dwarves and no buckets?

The most common reason for a non-injured dwarf to doe of thirst is because they are stuck. If many die, check the stairs and doors. Recruit one that is thirsty and station him in the brewpit. If he can't get there, you have a problem.

Look at the cancellation messages, too. They may have a hint.

Check your setting for whether dwarves can go outside. All it takes is a single tile of exposed passage and you've got a problem.

set it so that you get all cancellation messages for the time you check for cancellation messages. Its under orders (o), and I think the specific key is x, just hit that until it says 'announce all cancellations'.

I believe they can die of thirst when they go insane.

I believe they can die of thirst when they go insane.

That would be the melancholy mood.

Usually for me it's one dumbass dorf who got trapped behind his own construction, despite my attempts to designate buildings in a dwarf friendly way, and use of excessive floor tiles.

Actually it's any type of insanity.

Aaaah, I've found what has caused their deaths. There's a sublevel of my fortress that had been connected to the rest of the fortress by some ramps. I must have mined them away somehow... Some dwarfs have got trapped in there. I hope I can resue the still living dwarfs before they go belly up.

All that frothing at the mouth really does a number on your body's water reserves.

Insanity doesn't "run out of time." A dwarf is insane for the rest of their life (which is usually very short because of the insanity).

Obviously "running out of time" would mean dying in that instance.
