The Community Game!

Hello and welcome to the community game, here is where we are developing a game in 24 hour increments as a community. If you want to sign up just ask.

What is 'The Community Game'?

The Community Game is a game being developed by the Bay 12 Games residents in Python v2.6. we aim to make a succesful game that is easy for the other participants to edit.

Who is participating?

Everyone!

What do I need to join in?

You need very basic knowledge of Python 2.6, it's a simple, easy to program language that can be picked up in a few days.

GML could cause some complications, as some people might use the drag-and-drop actions, the drag-and-drop script, or actual scripts, or a strange combination of them... that, combined with possibly conflicting GM versions, and someone maybe using a "registered" function without realizing it (I still have my copy registered from ages ago... although I guess it probably doesn't carry over into version 8... I really haven't been following it recently.)

I'm with Armok here, Python sounds like a good option.  I don't have much personal experience with it, but it shouldn't be too hard to pick up, especially if you were to use something like Pygame or whatever it's called. 

No matter what ends up getting used, I'll take a turn, although depending on the language choice, I may have to take a later turn so I can learn the language first :P

On the Wall is a Masterfully engraved carving of Urist McHardcastle and Goblins. Urist McHardcastle is surrounded by the Goblins. The Golbins are stamping on Urist McHardcastle. Urist McHardcaste is laughing at the Goblins. The carving related to the prolonged and bloody death of Urist McHardcastle in the Fall of 1659, the Winter of 1659, and the Spring of 1660. On the engraving is an image of Cheese.

I ended up finding out you can speed up pregnancies by changing the mother to a cat to knock them up and changing back before labor

I'd be happy to participate!

I don't know any python,
 but I doubt you'd switch to C++...

I'll look into python a bit, and if this thing lasts long enough,
 I can contribute further down the line.

Python is good, and has had plenty of good deveopment in terms of game capability over the past several years. It's a good way to start.

You can print text, right?
As long as the characters are all the same size, it will work fine.

I've done so many of these things
 that I could probably make one in five minutes in C++.

Hmm...
I was hoping for an interactive fiction game...

Maybe we can do both side by side,
 or make a project that includes both elements?

I propose we let the game evolve as it goes, no reason it can't start as interactive fiction and migrate to roguelike, or tile based graphics.

So who's taking the first turn?

@Outcast Orange: Yeah, characters are all the same size, but... It'll take some thinking to be able to make a roguelike.

@jplur: you're probably right, lets just let the game evolve as it does. I was gonna take the first turn but my Python just broke (gives and invalid syntax error at the 'print' comand :P ). If I can get it fixed I'll go first but if I can't one of you guys will have to.

I'll look up some Python equivalents of C++ concepts,
 and then I'll contribute something original.

Okay, turns out that in python 3.1.1 the 'print' function needs paranthesis. I'll redo the OP and get started on a simple text adventure that I will post tommorow. I'll probably keep a dev-log until then.
