ppc linux build?
« on: March 19, 2010, 11:12:52 am »

Hi,

I was wondering if you could build DF for Linux/PPC in addition to the i386 build. I could provide you with a shell access to a box where you could do the build if you don't have any available. Yes, I suppose you don't want to do the build on somebody else's machine, but I don't have any other ideas to offer, unfortunately :-/

... I would do this myself of course, if the main DF program would be open-source... but this isn't gonna happen any time soon, I guess?

I know nothing about linux, so sorry if that might seem like a stupid answer, but the Mac version works fine on my PPC, isn't it possible to make it work on linux?

A PPC Mac build wouldn't work on Linux for various reasons. (It could probably be made work, by writing a huge amount of wrapper libraries.)

The best chance you have of making it happen is if you donate the hardware required to make the build to Toady, I believe.

You could do a port of Kobold Quest, and send that in to toady. That's how DF was ported to the Mac.

You don't need a port, just a recompile. The linux version should work fine.

@Toady: If you look on google for "how to cross compile ppc binaries" and your distro that you compile on, it should get some results.

Also, hi vegai o/

Who the hell uses a Linux computer powered by a Power PC chip? I've never even heard of that before, why should Toady waste his time making a program that only one person (the OP) is ever likely to use?

According to wiki the processor is found in a lot of cars. Where better to put Df in control?

Alternate builds are neat. Imagine it on a ps3.

Also, play nice.

The PPC machines were most certainly Macs; the G5s were decently powerful. But they're now four years old - it may not be worth supporting for Linux. For Mac I think the binary is already fat with PPC and Intel.

Yeah, old macs are almost certainly the cause of this post.

How do you think it'd do on ARM?

ARM chips all use less  than one watt of power so that's a big no no

Frankly I think that Toady could be putting his time to better use by re-programming Dwarf Fortress to run on OS/2 Warp than listening to any of the other suggestions in this thread

What's that got to do with anything?

Almost all desktop CPUs use over 30w of power, most use over 65w.

Look, that's all besides the point. The problem is that in order for Toady to push out a PPC linux binary, he'd need to have yet another box to compile on... Unless he can get a dual boot system going for the Mac he compiles the mac ppc version on.

G3, G4, G5 macs. There are lots of those and Apple just dropped support on them. Installing Linux on one is a good way to keep the software up-to-date.
