I understand what you're saying.

I'm just having Imp feel a lot of regret for the death of her rival, and for the almost collapse of the fort. I would think some traumatic events such as that would leave emotional scarring. I want to involve Imp in my story, but then, I don't want to alienate her from you, soo.. I dunno.

It's a succession game, and I just feel it'd be better with more story involved, using all of the characters. ^^;

*applauds story*

Sucks about the crash though, you might want to turn on monthly autosaves if your fps stays the way it is.

I sure felt bad about those things, especially the death of Solon Kamudo!  To tell you how meaningful this story was to me at the time, I haven't looked at my or your posts for all these months since I finished my turn, and haven't thought about what your character's first name was either.  Yet I remembered it, instantly, as I started to type it above (And yeah, I ran back to the start of this thread to verify I remembered right - but the thing is, I did  :o)

I wanted the tale of our rivalry to echo through this game for many successions to come, for it to be a great and awesome story between us.  Instead, I bungled the defense of the fort enough to almost kill the whole thing, and I lost your character and countless others, while somehow not losing my own.   :-\.

I'd expect some of the deepest scars Tun Imp had would be from her lover's death, but again, it's been eight years.  And what people (human or dwarven) say is not necessarily what that person is thinking or feeling.

I assure you though, you've not alienated me from Tun Imp in the slightest!  When my turn comes again, I don't know, yet, which character I will play, or what that character's goals might be.  There is a chance it will be Tun Imp again, if that character lives to that point.  But I've made no plans as of yet, except that whatever my character is, I mean to write as deep and 'feels real' a story as I am capable of across the course of my year.

I'm enjoying what you are writing!  I'm curious to see what comes next.  And it's always neat to see your characters return to mention again in a story, thank you for that!

Thanks Grim. And, I might just try that.

I see. Alrighty then, Imp. ^^

My next update may not come until tonight or tomorrow, sadly. I'm doing work for my mom. Some administrative stuff that she wants me to add to my resume. -_- I wish she'd pay me for it.

Liking the story Kamudo. I'm rather excited about seeing Drake participate in both something story-driven and historical. I feel my entries were mostly just reporting stuff as it comes or as I do it and trying to make it entertainin to read. I never gave much thought to engineering a steady and constant plot.
Can't wait for the next thrilling installment.

Thank you, Jordrake.

Drake is probably going to be mainly a self important individual, often referring to his large D. I'm still working out the kinks.

Also, I know I've taken more than a week, and I'm sorry for it. I'm mainly planning the next part of the story out, and I'm a bit side tracked with work, my new mega project and a few other things.

I'll try to advance to Fall at least by tonight or tomorrow.

On the plus side, I've gone back to college, and with any luck I'll end up a medical researcher one of these years, and maybe one day I'll help some of us live a few years longer - years we will surely devote to additional DF play.

On the down side, between more than full time school and almost full time work still, I really can't commit to playing when my turn comes anymore.  I was really hoping that I'd be able to take my turn before school started, but that didn't happen (Halfway through the first week, and already swamped with homework, wooo!).  With the whole really flexible feel to how long turns are taking now, I feel like I can't even attempt to plan 'when' my turn might come, and I find myself stressing about the succession game and me.

So I'm bowing out of this succession game and removing my upcoming turn, though I'll still watch this forum when I get a little free time.  Thanks for the fun, and the tolerance when I was trying to uphold the rules, even when no one else wanted them kept!

D: Aww.

I'm gonna miss you Imp! Sorry I couldn't finish my turn in time for you. I'm currently fighting with my girlfriend, looking for work, and running errands all of the time. >.<

I wish you well in your career.

Hematite 6 -210

I awoke in a cold sweat, looking around at the small room I was in. "Huh, you're finally awake." I looked over at Imp, feeling relieved it wasn't more shadows. "Lay back down. You're still recovering." I laid my head back down, but then shot back up.

"What... about the.. journal?!" I had trouble speaking, but my level of alarm was very clear.

She walked over and sat down next to me, pulling the book out from inside her ++Rope Reed Tunic++. "The journal is safe. I recovered it while bringing you back."

"Well, give the journal back?" I reached for it, and Imp was hesitant, but eventually handed it over to me. "Ugh.. What day is it?"

"The sixth of Hematite. You slept a long time. Once you recover, we can get back to making plans and taking care of things. For now, let the mayor handle them." Sighing, I laid back down, and returned to a deep sleep.

Hematite 13 - 210

A human diplomat arrived. Nothing I could do about it, being bedridden.

Hematite 18 - 210

Election day. I voted for myself, and Imp voted for me as well, but to no surprise, Mc Math was reelected.

Hematite 23 - 210

Massive amounts of trading with the humans went on today.

Hematite 27 - 210

Finally feeling strong enough to leave the bed, Imp and I walked along the halls of the fort, planning out next stage of action. "So, Imp, what should we do? I'm not really sure." I squeezed my hands on the journal in my pocket.

"Perhaps we should seek out Drake. He might be able to help us. Even if he's a tad bit, ya see, quirky. Not sayin it be a bad thing." I nodded and we continued onto the Magma pipe overlook.

Reaching the overlook, we see a stout Dwarf, beard blowing in the wind, standing confidently, staring over all that he has created. "Are you Drake?" I asked him.

"Aye, that I am. And you two are Snake, and Imp. I was waiting when ya would come and see me. Ya come to ask me for help in learning the mysteries of the journal, defeating Mc Math, or some other epic tale of.. Dwarfyness." Drake Sighed. "I'm sorry, but my D takes priority to all of that. I'll offer advice, but I don't wanna be risking my life." We nodded, understanding, and disappointed.

Slowly walking off, Drake called to us. "That book be evil. Don't trust it. And don't trust Mc Math either, ya hear?"

Dear god, this game can not go any slower. I'm probably just going to let things run through fall, and pick the story up again there. I don't know.

Almost done with fall. I'm giving up on the story aspect. I just want it done.

Some shit happened in my life, so I've been busy with that. So yeah. I'll try wrapping the game soon.

Winter 210

The long year, which had been confusing, for the most part was finally coming to a close. But of course, no year is complete without insanity.

Final Chapter - Destroy the book

Winter was coming to a close, and myself, Imp, Drake, and our new friend Grim, were up exploring the old ruin together. Last time I was up here, alone. It didn't end well. We sifted through tons of crap, until Drake found a hidden door at the back of the cavern. "Well, lookie what I found here. They don't call me great for nuthin." He motioned to Grim, who came forward and used his pick to break open the door. Air rushed into the room, which hadn't been disturbed in years. Cautiously stepping into the room, it illuminated itself. With what, we don't know. Suddenly, some sort of apparition appeared, in the form of a dwarf.

"I am Lilar. Dwarven god of Oaths and Loyalty. I have appeared to you in this place, to discuss something important with you." He pointed a long finger at me.

"By Lilar!" Imp bowed deeply, scraping her beard across the floor.

"That book is evil." The journal floated from my pocket and floated in front of us. "It creates dissonance between leaders, and shifts the balance of power in kingdoms. All who are in possession of the book, are forever trapped in its pages when they die. And those who use the book, want it even more. It drives people mad. You four, have resisted its urges well. Your leader, however, has not." Lilar closed the great stone door behind us. "McMath, wants the book to consolidate his power over the entire kingdom. You must destroy the book."

"But how?" I questioned the god.

Drake laughed. "Simple. Magma."

"The young lad is right. Take it to the highest point above your magma pit. And drop it in. Burn the book, free everyone's souls." Lilar took raised a hand and disassembled the door, blasting it backwards, knocking unconscious the Dwarfs that had amassed on the other side. "Now go! McMath will be wanting that book."

Imp bowed. "Thank you Lilar!" She began to turn, but was stopped by Lilar.

"Kamudo's death was not your fault. Do not blame yourself, my child. She will be free, and her spirit will rejoice in my kingdom. She will be waiting, along side your husband." Imp smiled softly, and nodded. "I will not appear to you anymore. Now go!"

We ran out of the room, looking back, I saw Lilar bow his head and vanish. We rushed to the exit, stepping over the unconscious Dwarfs. A member of the fortress guard stood in our way. "Ya ain't goin no where but to the depths of Armok's lair." He drew a battle axe and blocked our path.

Grim gripped his pickaxe and stepped forward. "Ya wanna tussle, eh?" He looked back to us. "I got this. Ya go and burn the book. If the book is gone, people be getting their sanity back, aye."

I nodded. "Thanks Grim!" I gripped the journal tight, as Grim and the guard member clashed weapons. At the right moment, we ran past, out onto the mountainside. Our little legs let us run as fast as we were able, the three of us hopped down slopes, dogding our deranged friends, and pets. We got down to about ground level and looked around. "The front entrance is probably blocked.."

Drake folded his arms and grinned. "We gonna be using my secret Drake entrance."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He showed us where, and we jumped the small gap, running uneasily along the wall, until we reached the center courtyard. Surprisingly, nobody was here. So we entered the fort and snuck along the corridors to the magma pit. Things here were quiet as well, until the Hammerer appeared. "It's a sad day without a hammering. McMath says you all need a good hammering. Heh." He swung the hammer around, laughing.

"Hmph. You two, up top, now." Drake lifted us up ontop of his large D. "Get your wee little asses up there and burn the damn thing. I'll handle this.. Jackass." He grinned and turned from us, facing the hammerer. "Hey you, I've got a bone to pick with you. Let's dance, asshole." Drake grinned and put up his fists, and begun fighting the huge Dwarf.

"Drakkeee." Imp shouted, but I pulled her away from the edge. "There ain't no way he's gonna win."

"He doesn't need ta win. Just hold him off long enough." I looked up at the sky and lightning raced across it. Slowly climbing up the stairs we reached the highest platform. Waiting for us at the top was McMath, who looked very angry.

"Now see here, boy. You're going to give me that book, or there's going to be hell to pay!" He held out his hand, expecting me to hand over the book.

"No." I stated simply, and tossed the book to the edge. He jumped out and grabbed it, falling off the side. He was hanging by one arm off the platform. I reached out for him. "Drop the journal and give me for fat hand!"

McMath grinned. "Not gonna happen."

Suddenly, a hammer flew up and hit McMath square in the hand, causing him to drop the Journal, and fall himself. One of the forts Giant Scorpions jumped over, saving McMath, but the journal splashed into the lava. Glancing over to the side, we saw Drake waving up at us, sitting on the unconscious Hammerer.

The journal floated in the lava, the words on the front of it: "Whoever owns this journal shall be the ruler of the fort for a year", they glowed in red before the book burst into a bright light. It dissolved and thousands of glowly lights began to float up. The lights took shape of men, dwarfs, elves, goblins, and various other creatures, as they all slowly floated towards the sky. One glowing dwarf in particular stopped on the platform where Imp and I stood.

"Thank you for saving me." A smile spread across the face of the spiritual entity.

"You.. You're Kamudo." I gasped. I turned to Imp, who was equally in shock.

"Snake, thank you for having the courage to destroy the book and free me. Imp, thank you for guiding this young man on the right path." Rubbing her ethereal beard, she laughed. "It's time for me to go. You're a good son." Floating up into the sky, she vanished, along with all of the others that created such a beautiful light show.

"Kamudo.. Was my mother.." I smiled happily, and Imp and I slowly walked down the stairs together.

Granite 2 , 211

"So, the Mountain home is to never hear about any of this, is that correct?" The Baron paced in front of us. Myself, Imp, Drake, Grim, McMath, the Hammerer, The giant scorpion, some guards, and a cat. "We will tell them that we're going to continue trying the experimental leadership testing, and we're not going to mention anything about Lilar, the cursed book, all that glowing crap in the sky, and anything else. Is that clear?" We all nodded. "Good, now get out of my office."

It had been a very long year, but everything finally returned to normal around the fort.

McMath apologized for his strange behavior, and managed to start losing weight.

Drake has already informed us of his plans to build a second large D. I told him to keep me out of the construction of it.

Grim went back to his duties as a miner, but now he boasts that he defeated many dwarfs, and strange beasts. We'll never know what happened.

Imp and I currently live together happily. It's nothing official, but hey, every hero needs the girl, right?

And I say I was pretty damn successful this year.

Final chapter - End.

----------
There, I wrapped it all up. I'll upload the save in the next post. Along with any relevant information.

I'll have to go back and see who is next.

Oh, also really slow game, FPS wise. Such a pain.

Wow, Kamudo.  How great to see you again!  ;)

I really enjoyed your tale, now that I've had time to read it.  But I already miss the journal.  I -liked- that IC reason for the succession game's successions to happen.  If I had time to take a new turn, my new character would have recalled the legends and tried to made a new journal!  (Wouldn't it be neat if writable materials could be created as artifacts) 8)
