Turns for all who ask, NotQuiteJesus.  Welcome to turn 211, when that turn comes.

lordnincompoop, how's year 207 going?
Year 206. And it's going pretty well - I'll post a report soonish. Just some mysterious thirst/hunger deaths.

*ponders*

The Players involved:
Kamudo - Year 201 -FINISHED-
Lucied - Year 202 -FINISHED-
Imp - Year 203 -FINISHED-
Darkrider2 - Year 204 -FINISHED-
Grimlocke - Year 205 -FINISHED-
Jordrake - Year 206 -FINISHED-

I wonder if we're somehow replaying the year Jordrake played?

edit: Doh.  Darkrider2 dropped out in the middle of his turn, and I'd forgotten to note it.  Carry on, 206 it is ;p

Spoiler: Outside view (click to show/hide)

I looked over the fort, taking in all the details. I shook my head as I realised that this was not, indeed, a well-planned fort. No well-planned fort would need exploratory mining. And out of the many problems this fort has, there is one that is the most worrying. Homelessness.

Spoiler: The old bedrooms (click to show/hide)

I have counted only some 10 rooms, for 70 dwarves. This means 60 homeless, and I simply could not accept that. All dwarves have the right to a home, no matter what. I will not put others through what I have experienced. So, some levels down in the fortress, I planned for an efficient housing complex, able to house a full fortress. There was no problem submitting this for a approval to the mayor, as growth is always welcome.

Spoiler: The new bedrooms (click to show/hide)

Another thing that I noticed was the use of exploratory mining. Although this is not necessarily a bad thing  (however unnecessary for a good fort), it was placed in a crucial spot for the fortress, and had it not been there it would have made my job easier and the fortress faster. So I decided to cut our losses and halt it. This was a little harder to push through, but I managed to assure the mayor that with the new complexes, we would make plenty of stone. In fact, I'm starting to consider an industrial complex as well.

And with this done, I decided to kick back and watch for a while. But as soon as my guard went down, a horde of goblins appeared on our doorstep, wishing to pilfer our beloved treasures. Fortunately, they were quickly defeated at the hands of our skilled warriors and excellent cage traps. The mayor got quite upset about this, and refused to do anything that week. A whole week of productivity lost because that man had a tantrum. I decided that I'll have to off him someday.

Spoiler: The failed ambush (click to show/hide)

However, it was also a terrible mistake on my part. I had failed to keep the defenses up, and the whole fortress suffered. The soldiers, especially  - they need no more souls to burden their hearts with guilt. And so, I decided to focus on the complex, and as it was being mined slower than I expected, I ordered the production of some picks and set upon a mass-mining project, after some misunderstanding were cleared up (Bow-making? Really? Sometimes I start to think that I'm the only literate dwarf in here). I myself partook in some when I had the time, but alas, I could not do too much. As it happened, the mayor's boiled Giant Eagle egg was overdone, so he decided to dump some paperwork on me while he sulked in his room. A fair world, indeed.

Spoiler: Mass-mining (click to show/hide)

-----------------------------------------------

Not much happened. Some ambushes, snatchers. Began my plans for industrial and living complexes. As I'm quite the novice when it comes to bloodlines, I decided to play it safe and use a design that had been useful to me for several forts. Quite efficient, especially with side-stairs (I'll try to work those in later). I widened some stairs from 1x1 to 3x3 for efficiency and fps purposes. Some dwarves mysteriously died of thirst, even though we have plenty of booze. I'll have to investigate.

Spoiler: Status (click to show/hide)

It is summer now, and I await the human caravan with great hope, for they may have those critical supplies we lack. The complex is now mined out, and I have set the mass-miners onto the task of mining out the framework for other levels - after a short celebration, of course. I have set more temporary stockpiles, at the front of the fort, to keep everything where I can see them. We have a lot of wood. So I have started ordering beds for the complex, and the others will place them in the room when the first batch is complete. For now, they will clear the mining debris.

All is well, and even the mayor has been happy now, only ordering the export of ballista arrows and parts be forbidden. Understandable, as we have scarce few but as I do not recall ever exporting them this seems slightly sudden. Preemptive action, perhaps?

Nice job. You pretty much just fixed all the stuff I couldn't be bothered to (Housing, stone, and I had no idea what to do with the mining).
Am I the only one that thinks the new bedrooms look like swastikas, though?

It has a tendency to happen when working with radial designs. Can't be helped.

Because of its shape, swastika-y things turn up everywhere.

PS: I have no affiliation with nazism, if someone was thinking that.

Oh, bravo!  Nicely planned and written.  I expect future leaders and inhabitants will be using and praising your works, knowingly or not, for a great many turns to come.

It seems that many dwarves here have changed priorities. Most of the inhabitants are off hauling something or other instead of doing real work, and the village manager, Drake, refuses to do anything but stand around, making me order everything manually. Major project slowdowns. The possibility that I may end my reign with nothing complete looms near.

Even worse, the dwarven elections were taking place, meaning more work for me. I had to prepare every single speech, letter and interview for that blasted good-for-nothing dwarf, and not a word of appreciation comes. Not a one. But, I know that this is better than the alternative: Having someone else be mayor, and running the risk of being hammered - or even worse, fired and stripped of my power, unable to make a difference.

I succeeded however, and it seems that such dark thoughts will be left 'til later.

Spoiler: The elections (click to show/hide)

-----------------------------------------------

Stuff is going slowly after all the dwarves decided to haul. Also, the village manager is refusing to process orders, despite being given an office. Phooey!

I sacrificed a goblin for Summersday as usual, and everyone cheered as I gouged its eyes out, sliced his ears and nose, slashed its belly open letting the guts fall out, slit its throat, then sacrificed the corpse to the magma in the traditional fashion. The others must have smelled the blood and heard the screams, for soon afterwards goblins ambushed us. Our wrestlers managed to defeat them, but not without losses; two warrior champions were shot and killed by crossbowgoblins.

Spoiler: The battle records (click to show/hide)

And in the midst of mourning, a fish cleaner became possessed by a spirit by the macabre events and created an artifact, which he names "Pagetreaty". It is a weapon rack, illustrating the irony of war and the difficulties of peace. A truly legendary work, which tells us that the spirit of greatness is within us all.

Spoiler: The artifact (click to show/hide)

I am currently commissioning a series of engravings to record these events.

I remain amazed every time there's word that Tun Imp is still alive.  Two terms as mayor now?  Guess if I ever take a turn again and use her as my avatar, I'll have to play her as having regained her sanity... either that or as having been padded with roop reed fiber. :-X

Nice writing, and I like the strong, progressive direction you're taking our fort!

And where did we get so much food and drink? I haven't touched the kitchens and stills ever since I started, but we still have plenty!

You can thank me for the drink. I employed an extra brewer and built an extra still to keep our good men and women from ever having to go without alcohol. Priorities, my man.

Hey there, goooood job. Your housing solution is much better then the one I was embarking upon; it seems not short of a masterpiece.

Then thank you very much. With your efforts, I can dedicate mine to building and infrastructure.

Also, I may need an extension on this. While I am trying my best, a lot of RL things are showing up at inconvenient events, delaying my progress.
