It's odd how DF's narrative framing depicts monster families as the evil ones.
Aye, when I was playing as Miga and went to the lair of a giantess and her two sons, one of them was standing with his back turned to the lair entrance - what I didn't mention is that he was talking with his brother - I just came up behind him and stabbed him in the foot. Kinda felt bad but w/e, I am a devoted worshipper of both Armok and Kek, and they respetively demand blood and chaos.
Part of this is the conversation available to NPCs. It's the idle chit chat that gives the impression that they're just leading their lives despite tags indicating semimegabeast or evil predispositions.
Creatures without [NOFEAR] will shout "this isn't happening, help me, save me!" as your "hero" swings away.
The only thing missing right now is a parent saying to their child, "Did you have enough to eat today?"

Ud left Gildwatchful the following morning and made his way 8 world map tiles eastward to Bulbouswisp, a hamlet with an asterisk loitering in the center. Permission obtained from lady Amkash Udashal, he opted to spend the night at the mead hall, but was interrupted by those bandits. After two combats, there was sleep, but in the morning Bulbouswisp would be cleared of gobbo mooks.
1 world tile north of Bulbouswisp was Confinedlove, a town that from the outside was no ruin. Inside the story was different. Everything was abandoned. Since the night before, Ud had been trailed by two asterisks, both containing soldiers from Bulbouswisp. The first asterisk was Luthi Radirasseg, a male lasher who had helped to repel the first bandit attack on the meadhall. The second was a group led by Thefin Epxabatow, an axewoman who had gathered an army of 2 alpacas and 3 dogs. In conversation both Luthi and Thefin were on important missions.
The town's keep was the ultimate destination. Stasost Mergedthieves, the goblin leader hammer lord, was found in the courtyard exiting the wall. She was covered in masterwork items and wielded a useless maul. Ud came into this combat as a legendary fighter/ambusher with professional shield, expert armor and wrestler, but only proficient axe and dodge. On the surface it was the normal series of exchanges where everyone misses the other until that fateful blow.
Beneath all that there's the tale of defensive chance of failure, offensive chance of success, and beyond those stat comparisons, the choices that could be made. Like all weaponmasters, the Stasost needed to be disarmed as a lower level shield using manual block will eventually fail and the attack will pass encountering armor. The same applies for dodge, but even more so given the larger stat deficit. Ud began with grabs and quick attacks hoping to gauge speed. He was faster on the mutual 4 tick attacks, but did not land any grabs or strikes. While chance of success means one will eventually land, defensive chance of failure loomed, so Ud's combat preferences where changed to allow charging as Stasost did not appear to be strong in any way. Ud charged knocking her down. He dodged out of her vision cone to reposition himself for a back attack. Ud dragged the steel battle axe across her lower body spilling her guts. Ud followed this by dodging one tile away, then jumped backwards twice to give the bleed out time to affect her. They closed for a few exchanges and then Stasost died.
The throne room inside the keep was filled with goblin priests. This was all very odd. Ud waited for his allies Luthi and Thefin to catch up and there he encouraged them to engage in slaughter by initiating the first attack. In Legends it was confirmed Stasost Mergedthieves was not just a hammer lord, but also a vampire cult leader, so these acolytes had to be purged.
