Was trying to find a way to seed more small steel gear around during world gen, my original plan of a modded race that leaves a set of steel plate upon death or butchering didn't work, then I realized I could give their civ access to the stuff and that should scatter some around to go find. In the process I decided to play around with some differently balanced swords to try and make a daisho set that was distinct from just using a long sword and short sword.

During a test run I geared up a dorf and grabbed a tagalong crossbow dorf, we bumped into a dark pit and he decided there was little difference between flushing goblins and flushing quail.

He charges up top and scares them, the most accessible route out of the tower was the west doors, so I camped a space away from them and did my best to make sure none of them got out...

>.>

Later I noticed one of my steel angel civs lasted all through world gen and happened to have some elves next door so I rolled one up and raided some of their sites for loot, ended up finding a vampire, roaming some underground dorf highways, and then I found a big clump of elf retreats.

Elf tossing is so much more fun than dorf tossing could ever be.

I removed wood armor and weapons from the elf entity raws, so they'd become more dangerous. One of the side effects is I'll find grown metal armor in lairs, some of which is steel.

Yeah, was trying to avoid doing the "grown steel breastplate" stuff, briefly thought of modding in an ironwood tree, or even an ironwood treatment reaction, and actually tried out a world where humans have steel... which is not my cup of tea, yeah it's handy as a human adventurer, but it's annoying on everyone else, and it doesn't really change much about your opponents since they still go "I need a helm, and uh... ooh, that breastplate looks nice... maybe a couple mail shirts, and I'm good to go!" so I reverted that change after one test world.

I tried a couple things to make dorfs stop crapping out billions of pieces of low quality copper trash, a handful of middling quality iron pieces, and once in a blue moon something steel. Didn't have much luck, while adding in just the steelmaking reaction and armors/weapons to a new small-sized race means I can find sites that have a trove of goodies distributed around without having to deal with a horde of godstomping steelclad ubermodbeasties.

Incidentally the best way I found to make a daisho (katana+wakizashi) set work that both avoids being stupidly overpowered and actually gives you a reason to use them together instead of one with a shield was surprisingly obvious after I realized it worked for weapon tokens:
[ATTACK_FLAG_INDEPENDENT_MULTIATTACK]

Tossing that into weapons you intend to be paired together lets you multi-attack without the huge penalties so you don't feel the need to compensate by making the weapons overpowered. It would work fine for short swords even to give a reason to use them over long swords.

I love wading through a crowd of enemies while plotting a path so I can try to take two heads per step, makes it feel much more reasonable when the stragglers turn and flee.

Steel trees sound very dwarven, are you sure these are elves and not dwarves who decided to get into herbomancy?

In a world where I planned on just playing dwarven raiders vs hamlets, I modded the item_armor.txt just to expand coverage of mail changing them from shirts [UBSTEP:1] to coats [UBSTEP:MAX]. For similar reasons I reverted back to vanilla shirts [UBSTEP:1] for every other world as it would have improperly helped any beast killer, as lower arm coverage is too big a buff.

It's elven. Their eldritch abomination style is unmistakeable.

I had a result I've been unable to reproduce so far where I was trying to cross a large serrated disc with a shield, in the process I left in one of the weapon definitions I had copied parts over onto the shield portion and noticed that while it let me attack as normal (was a spear since the adventurer in that save was a spear user) it didn't block like a shield at all, however it did give "but the attack is deflected by the spear" messages along with the usual "but the attack is deflected by the helm/breastplate/gaunlet" ones.

Haha after going bersark as a vampire and reducing a hamlet to a bunch of cowering farmers
I went to the local lord and he commented on my art work, yes snow is my canvas and blood my medium, i proceded to torture him and removed his eyes, and claimed his shit in the name of vileblood. Got bored with his jabbering and pushed his skull into his frontal lobe. And moved onto his axe man. A while later the axeman had no hands, feet, ears, tongue or dignity, me laughing over his pale body i told him to stop fighting, he listened. Now he wants to follow me into battle, death and glory.
Learn from this. As this is true stockholme syndrome. And im not done with the poor maggot yet. Hes my preserved food source.

I was strangling lords and ladys and all the witnesses and claiming the area in the name of vileblood and I arive at a castle. And strangle the head preist (fog something rather) and the lady gets in my range and i begin to throttle the bitch whore girl, then her son gets in range, choke him out while still choking mother, then i realise shes a tough woman... to tough. I decided to look at her clothing, oh shit sentient life jewelry. She doesnt breathe. For fucks sake.
Halberd time.
She ends up being a tough little fight and ended up giving my foot sensory nerve damage. Aww too bad i like that foot being sucked on.
Ended up slaying her and becoming lord to the mainly goblin civ. Should have realised the gobs wouldnt follow any old human.
And she was probably a fair and honorable leader.
Well its a new age now, an age of blood.

BY ARMOK, THIS IS THE FUNNIEST WORLD-GEN BUG EVER!

I put elevation variance to 3200x3200 so I wouldn't get big blocks of mountains cutting the map in half, right?

I approach a human hamlet and see an asterisk on the map, so I stroll over to ambush the ambushers, keep in mind this is all takes place where my dorf is, I was planning to go for the southern ambush next:

So I pop in, dismiss the ambush message and head for the gob... as I'm hacking their head off I notice something... unusual:

...is that... a massive amount of water hanging in the air above me?

...I'm uh, gonna stand on that hillside over there and watch, good luck Mrs. Human Lasher!

Is that another one to the west?

Wow, that was weird as hell, glad it's over and I didn't get killed.

Guess I'll head over this way where it's dry, away from the random blocks of water...

OH COME ON, SERIOUSLY?

WHO

KEEPS

DROPPING

SWIMMING POOLS?

GEEZ

ENOUGH ALREADY

...so yeah, that happened.

Gotta be careful with a couple things, I have some mild raw tweaks (dorf girls have beards, dorfs get sustenance from drinking, not food, elves are cannibals so they don't drink but do eat and can stance climb, modded steel angel race which is like an elf size steel version of a bronze colossus, and my experimental daisho setup with a metal I put in called soulsteel to see what candy properties with steel mass would be like) and I used a reclaimed fort to make a set of artifact gear to test out the soulsteel stuff, but I'm sure that isn't what caused this since it happens right around that hillside and river.

Oh, and don't try to set foot in Basementoceans, it'll crash ya every time.

Fortress I reclaimed to make the artifacts for my mod metal testing, think it's south-southwest from the hamlet with the pool-bombing. Incidentally since I messed up during the reclaim (I forgot to make sure the civ I reclaimed with one was the same one that lost the fort/lives in the area) it let me learn something handy: there isn't currently a "make citizen" script that I know of, but in gm-editor you can change the civ id, pop id, and cultural id to the same ones as your dorfs, and go into uh, flags2 and set resident to false, which makes the hostile former residents into happy members of your fort. Though you gotta manually add preferences if you wanna get a useful response when forcing them to mood.

I found a forest retreat with trenches and small towers, like you'd see in a dark pits.
I can safely fast travel through the retreat.
