Arrived to the first town as a female human spearman, worshipper of wealth. Everything is abandoned. The town suvivors (lots of goblin administrators, elves and a few human guards) are all hiding in the castle's keep. Went around the place with my dwarf axeman and a lousy human pikeman.

The only shop left was General Imports, three goblin priests hiding in the outskirts from the lizardmen and ratmen that roam the town. They had nothing except a bunch of coins. We scattered the harassers, killed a couple of them (mostly the dwarf cutting heads left and right while the pikeman was pummeled), and claimed the goblin shop. Made the goblin priests stock the chopped bits from one fallen fellow.

Now we are chasing around the rest of beastmen and stocking the shop to exploit our current monopoly in the area.

I wonder, what would they do if someone killed their king.
Inevitable, who cares. Now an onion...

Recently started as an elven adventurer. In my current 700+ year world, the goblins have dominated the dwarfs, few of those short alcohoolic little guys still exist, but there are still mounds, but for some reason i can't play with them. Anyway, my elf sneaked into a fortress and stole some armor and an iron sword, along with some gems to sell later. While sneaking i got caught by a Goblin Hammerman, which was easy-fight. Stabbed his leg, shattered his bones, he passed out and then i hammered his head with his iron maul.

It was getting dark outside, so i had to find some place to stay for the night. Found a dwarven mound, slept inside it with the permission of a Woodcutter. Woke up with an "ñ" trying to kill me. Vanished after a while. In the next day i made a journey to Ectocavern, my past adventurer was told that there was a vampire there. Ambushed a few times, killed some gobbos, night came, run away from the boogeyman! And then i tried to escape them but they were too fast for me, killing my with ease. It was inevitable.

Since the standard bandits are giving absolutely zero challenge to a shieldball, I've been trying to find anything stronger.
I'd settle for an Ettin or Minotaur; something harder like a dragon or hydra would be preferred.
But no; absolutely nobody knows the exact location of any megabeast or semimegabeast, and I'm not searching every map tile of each area to try to find any of them.
I've been trying to use legends to locate them to no avail; all I've found is an ettin in a fortress.

I'll tell the two guys adventuring with me to leave.
Maybe bogeymen will be a greater challenge...

EDIT: Bogeymen are tough. Not as strong as a shieldball, since every bit of damage my adventurer absorbed was from when he was Stunned. Took down all of them with nothing worse than light bruising and a broken ear. Also, they proved enough of a challenge to send me from x/2700 Shield User and x/2800 fighter to somewhere in the 5000s of needed experience.

Sleeping in an abandoned house as a half naked female outsider in the process of gathering gear.

Woke up with a pikeman, lasher, and two spearmen on top of me demanding I drop my recently found iron spear.

...did so, dodged away, tried to grab it back, no luck.

Got the one with it to chase me away from the others, circled around in stealth mode and stabbed his foot, he fell over, jabbed his brain, took my spear back, took his back, butchered his body, ate his heart, threw pieces of him at his friends, then tracked them down and did the same til I found the leader, the lasher bitch who spit on me... broke her legs, pulled her tongue out, and kicked her then let her bleed to death in a pile of vomit before scattering her chunks around the area.

Been systematically stealth killing all the bandits and criminals in the area now, rob me will you?

Update: after scoring something like 84 kills with a no quality iron spear and thinking about updating the save to .24 and play until dfhack is updated I decided to changeitem it into masterwork adamantine, then she gathered up some gear and supplies and left them in a claimed hamlet for the elf I was gonna follow in her footsteps with.

After updating to .24 I was down in a cave checking for random bits of small gear to stash away and bumped into one of the only things so annoying I just gm-editor > pos edit myself somewhere else: a giant cave spider. Having one ambush you and sit there repeatedly webbing you while chomping ineffectually on your helmet gets old fast.

Unfortunately I can't pos myself away from it... so I had to get clever, I guess.

Well, looks like I can gather the webs... but that just gives me some of them, not all... but oh what's this, one of the options available is to ignite the moss!

Awesome! I bet fire will burn the webs away, now to set myself on fire and hope I can get away before I die...

...

...

Oh, wait, I can set fires under the spider and make it run away too... I probably should have tried that first before igniting myself... ah well.

...anyways, after making it back out of the cave and dropping off the gear, I retired her and took up her spear with an elf outsider (add the tag [INDIV_CONTROLLABLE] under raw/objects/entity_default.txt) and so far he's added another 107 kills to her tally of 115 on the spear... I don't know if I'll ever run out of bandits, this map is covered with the little yellow camp markers, and if I walk into a mead hall and it has more than two soldiers I just start slaughtering because they're more likely than not bandits.

It's amusing that I'm kinda getting used as a mercenary when one group I talk to tells me that the folks in another town are bandits or criminals, and then folks in that town tell me a third group is, and the third group claims the first one has been robbing them.

In 34.11 a nice test for shieldball would be a bandit camp that had weaponmasters, for growth purposes mainly.

Here in 40.xx, the dragon? If you strike it once and properly, it will pass out due to pain. If you just nick it, maybe it becomes interesting and a short fight begins. But yeah, you're too strong for all the creatures available.  Depending on where shieldball's wrestling is at a night troll can be fun.

I tend to think of the scale like this:

random civ peasant (no skill) —> NPC adv/soldier (competent weapon skill) —> Other semi-megabeast/megabeast (giant, cyclops, roc, ettin) —> NPC weapon master —> minotaur (because of grab/being in the maze) ---> hydra (speed) —-> bronze colossus (slow, but made out of metal) ---> night troll (because of grab/no pain/big speed)

The scale is based on how many mistakes you can make. I've left out anything that has a fire/web attack since that's random. I've also left out titans because they can range from ridiculously weak and made of a nice powder to a medium more durable than ettin-strength creature or maybe procedurally crazy fast (I'd hope) killer made out of metal.

Still, once you have stats in the thousands I think you're now at "the let's be creative and bizarre territory" where you fill a bag with skulls and club everyone you meet and then begin howling.

Hmmm... first off, I think I totally fell in love with the human vampire chick after I finally tracked down first the entrance to the catacombs, and then tracked her down inside of them... I find an axe lord standing there.. kay, gonna sneak up and stab her in the head then.

She dodges, we trade a few blows and circle a bit, then I manage to get her to drop her shield, while she gashes up my leg, dropping me to the ground, I roll away and stab her foot quickly enough to get a little bit of breathing room, and then we spend a good twenty or so exchanges dodging and parrying and poking and slashing and hacking at each other while crawling around a 2x1 column about 1 square from the bottom end of a long 4 tile wide room, the floors, the walls, everything is soaked with gore (I probably should have tried to drink it earlier and vamp up but I forgot for a while as I was just focused on keeping her from sticking that battle axe in me again), I finally got her weapon hand and after that point she was reduced to trying to bite me while I still had my shield, and I finally got my spear stuck inside of her skull, ending the gruesome ballet we painted the walls with.

I wish I had grabbed a SS but I was faint and bleeding despite drinking her blood so I slept real quick to close the wounds which cleaned the gore up sadly, but I still butchered her body, and then I grabbed her axe, skin, bones, skull, and heart. I left the bones and skin to either side of her axe in my mead hall, with the heart sitting on top of her axe, the skull I keep with me in my backpack, as a reminder of where the massive scar on my leg, and my newfound powers both came from.

While running around doing a bit of rampaging I found a campsite of elf refugees... and I guess this is why elves sleep in trees, they are shit at building placement:

I was like "huh, you guys look like you didn't plan this out well, how are you feeling? what do you think of me? did you know I killed your guards on the shore?" they were like "oh you jerk-glubglubglub" and drowned... ah well.

Then I discovered a fun new game that comes with being able to sprint constantly without tiring:

"Hey batta-batta-batta-sah-wing batta!"

"HE KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK!"

*sees someone near a shoreline*

Hee hee hee...

I might as well. When you're Legendary+A bunch shield user and fighter, I could definitely fill a sack with skulls/teeth/stolen socks and use it to kill everything.
Still wearing all the shields, though.

Vamps are the best, plus you can kill bandits in places where they are hard to find. Bloodsight OP

Bloodsight+stealth vision cones is awesome as hell for sneaking around stabbing people in the back of the head, fo sho.

I've got a ridiculous bandit population here though, like 200 notable kills on this spear so far and all but a handful are bandits/criminals.

I recently encountered a bit of weirdness on my visit to a dark pit. The upper levels seemed almost deserted: just a few scared civilians and children, and not a single armed goblin around. However, the large underground chamber, or "grave pit," was full of unaggressive trolls with professions, who were just standing around doing nothing. I naturally proceeded to slaughter all of them (they also happened to be butcherable, for some reason).

When I later returned to the scene of carnage after some further exploring, the troll corpses had mysteriously sprung back to life (without becoming undead):

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

(Note that the second image was taken after the first one: there are more severed body parts, but fewer dead trolls.)

Is this supposed to happen at this early stage of the goblin site's development, or have I stumbled upon an entertaining new "feature?"

I can answer the butchering part.
Unlike in .34, anything organic of significant size can be butchered by an adventurer.
One of my adventurers has bogeyman meat.

It sort of makes sense that ethics don't apply to adventurers. After all, they are doing things according to your ethics. *ninja'd*

EDIT: On an unrelated(?) note...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

...this reminds me of Worms 2 and The Baseball Bat.
