That would be the keep's dungeon. Every town/city keep has one. Size varies greatly, from what I've seen.

And they're often one of the most dangerous places to be, from my experience...
Yeah, how come dungeon-dwelling bandits always have night vision goggles!

Because ALL NPC's have nightvision goggles. And there's nothing we can do about it.

I'm trying to kill a bandit in the under keep. So far he has mulched 14 of my companions including my starting team of 4 who all had night creature and reptile men kills and 10 random dudes I grabbed in the over keep. I'd go at him myself seeing as I am decked out in all fine or better iron gear if it weren't for one little detail. He is a freaking elite crossbow dwarf and I'm pretty sure he still has plenty of ammo. So time to go grab some more meatshields to take his bolts for me and then I can finish this quest. So far I am up to 13 notable kills of which 2 are cyclopses, 2 are lizardmen, 7 are werebeasts, and 2 are random bandits.

Really I thought this guy was a goner when I first started. I got ambushed on my way to kill my first werebeast by bandits and ran for the hills. Later found out I had an arrow lodged in my chest but it didn't hit any organs. So my guys has been going along killing everyone with an arrow sticking out of him. Oh yeah and I survived a pack of 12 hyenas on my way to my second were beast. Hell yeah!

All hail Ero Mythstrengths The Bells of Erasure. (Probably got the name from all the jingling the bolt makes as I run at people in my full iron suit...)

edit: never mind I miscounted the number of bolts and the jerk finished me off. I went into legends mode, apparently I was a renowned legendary hero. Yay. I also like to look at how my companions did. Alot of kills all around mostly bandits, however one of my companions (one of my starting 4) surprised me of the 4 only one was non military (a miner) who managed to rack up 5 night creature kills and 2 bandit kills before being slain by the same bandit boss as me. So yeah, we were both legendary heroes felled by the same bandit... he must be some kind of revered evil master mind now in that kingdom....

Don't be silly!
NPC's are like cats, they have normal nightvision.
You know what that means?

We can tear their eyes out, and then they won't be able to see in the dark, will they?

Well, i just made a new adventurer, misc user with high agility, asked some farmer to join me, and got off for my quest to kill the leader and the ones who follow it (sorry.).
Arrived at the bandit camp wich was 1 mile or so out of town, when i noticed i didnt have a Misc weapon of any sort!
So i sprinted to a chest lying around in the hopes that it will be enough to kill the bandits.
Only to tangle with a a hammerbandit (Bandits are, in fact, a race themself) and get lashed in the back of the head by a lasherbandit.
So much for this adventurer.

Dwarf fortress ethics.
Of course there's an ethical way to train doctors! Toss children off short cliffs. Since they're not useful adults, injuring them isn't a waste of valuable labor, and since they're not nobles, it's ethical to use short cliffs instead of tall ones!

‼kobolds‼! So many ‼kobolds‼!

I thought it'd be cool to sneak my way down into the heart of a kobold cave. I made it down into the caverns while only having to kill ~60% of the kobolds haunting the tunnels. The instant I set foot on the cavern floor, my cover was blown and I was swarmed by kobolds. I don't even know what happened next, but I ended up at the bottom ofa  nearby cliff, surrounded by kobolds wailing on me like nothing else, and was just about to pass out from the unbearable pain. So I transformed, because I was playing as a werewolf (human caste i modded)

That gave me enough time to stand up, albeit nakedly, and start flinging fireballs at kobolds (because I learned the secrets of elemental magics, which I also modded) The battle has lasted ten minutes, with ‼kobolds‼ everywhere, a good chunk of the surrounding cverns explored, and absolutely no end in sight. The cooldown time on my fireball spell has been a hindrance, but the advantage has been great. I think I managed to get the vast majority of the horde caught in a ring of firey death. The next best weapons in my arsenal are my lightning spell for an instant 1-target K.O. and my trusty pickaxe.

Just imagine the screams of terror and pain, everywhere! The light of the fires casting shadows of flailing, dying kobolds across the ceilings and walls! They're still coming at me. Werewolves, druids in animal form, shamans that have no more curses to fling at me because I've been cursed to hell and back already. It's horrible, and I can't get close to the exit because it's still swarming with everything in the world that could possibly want me dead, but even as I move back form them I see that I am surrounded on all sides!

Well, I managed to escape. Took a few more ‼kobolds‼ and a lot of running in circles and walking right through walls of flame. Then, I continued my journey northward, and came upon fortresses inhabited by goblins, another kobold cave, and eventually found my way into some settlements.

Now, it is time to invade another tower, and learn more of their secrets.

Your tale makes my current human outsider who is killing kobolds look like a pussy... I only have ~100 kobold kills (mostly from stabbing but atleast 10 by batman esque strangulation 2 steps from their best friend.) Currently exploring the caverns but I've determined it's not worth my time and to find another cave. (preferably with more wild life) this world is cool though all 3 homeward races spawned on a continent together and the dwarfs as well as all the mountains. Spawned on the other continent. No interactions between any race but kobold for the poor dorfs.

I found a wonderful orge cave filled with the butchered remains of dwarves. The ogress inside had even captured a quern and made bone meal out of one of the skeletons! I managed to whip her to death, and loot all the steel goodies the dwarves had left behind. There was a lot of loot; I'd thought it was a kobold lair or something at first, but the prevalence of piles of dwarven neural tissue and prepared dwarf lungs kind of put that theory right out even before the ogress burst into the main chamber screaming about how she had brutalized some hero before.

Update on my adventurer, he is nearing 300 notable kills. 95% of which are kobolds, 90% of which lived in the same cave. So far he has wiped out an entire bandit camp, an entire kobold cave (I think), the giant bat which killed my last adventurer (stupid grasp on bats choking me out grumble...), 3 elf werebeasts, 1 goblin werebeast, 1 human were beast, and a large number of emu.

Corai will hate me for this but Kobold genocide is fun!

I decided to try my hand at modding and made a few animal-people playable as adventurers, who'd have thought a flying-squirrel man would make such a damn good swordsman?

Got up to master swordsman and I was cutting the hands and feet of bandits before they could even get a shot in, he has now retired in a human village.

Playing as a bogeyman is exciting though I don't get credit for noticeable kills I do get credit for murdering wildlife and most of all the noticable kills go into my weapons anyway.  Also in a ironic sense bogiemen have to fear the night twice as harder than any one else because once they enter crackling zone any attempts to leave it will end with them vanishing. Getting a bogeyman out of the Crackling Zone pretty hard(changing their civ to something not wild and reanimating them after crackling has ended.) Though doing so leave them as neutral sentient units.
