I never realized how deadly elves with wooden weapons really are until I modded every race to have reachable cities and tried to sack an elven one. My first companion died in seconds, this is that occasional civy you get who's a bad-ass that take on bandits alone. A elven bone doctor mutilated him with a wooden boning knife. They killed me soon after.
From now on I'm going to train up a bit before I attack cities...or just not be dwarves.

Wait...after achieving enough fame, bandits won't attack you?

Well if you become a hero to some civs, a lot of bandits will attack (tell them it was the Deadly Elderberries!) but won't actually be hostile. Also, when you go to kill a leader the enemies will just sit there.

This happened to me with genesis mod (not sure with normal) and Deon notes in one of the recent genesis pages that it has happened to him. However, I hadn't become a hero to sylvan elves so on traversing the continent I had to fight them off constantly.

It sucks IMO because sometimes you can't even find the guys trying to ambush you, they go off chasing giant squirrels. Also you can walk right up to the leader (your target) of a group. Tho this did save me, with tomitapio's version some of the bandits will go around recruiting and after the lynx I came up on 63 dudes hanging around a huge treasure hoard (I know the exact number because I reloaded countless saves grinding up my peasant, dodging arrows, taking down 5 or 10 guys at a time and then leaving to heal up, etc. Was epic!). If they had been autohostile I would have been shot a dozen times before I even saw them.

Well if you become a hero to some civs, a lot of bandits will attack (tell them it was the Deadly Elderberries!) but won't actually be hostile.
That explains a good deal of the below adventure of my goblin knifeman.
[Warning:The tag [LOCAL_BANDITRY] acts funny with adventuring civs and causes loyalty cascades when you bring site residents to other sites (I think that's how it works anyway)]
I'd just killed my hometown with a knife because they my companion and attacked me (I was stealth talking to a resident until he spotted me). So I'm working my way along the coast (bogeymen don't attack while on the beach)and I get the ambush message and wake up. I see a bunch of humans milling around me and I can talk to them. We have a pleasant chat, and I recruit them. I find their warlord and ask him for a quest. He tells me of a goblin swordsman to the southeast. I go there, ambushed a few times and gain a few recruits, they later all kill each other as I kill the swordsmen.
Right before I reach a friendly human settlement I'm ambushed by a very elven Human nomad group, and saved from death by a bear...who then eats me.
Thus ends Gozru Noislesshate the Slippery Torches of Confederacy the goblin knifeman.

The Wild Elf Berserker, Lebeyu Rhymesmiled the Tired Pungency of Glades and his four peasant wild elf companions were just surrounded and eaten alive by a camp of 20+ lizardfolk wrestlers. Lebeyu and his buddies had literally wiped out an entire continents worth of kobolds, traveled south to the human coastal cities, cleared out a cave full of trolls, and slaughtered human bandits with little more than a bunch of scratches on their arms and legs and some occasional vomiting. All with wooden weapons and armor (though eventually Lebeyu got an iron shortsword and scimitar to dual wield).

The lizardfolk literally sunk their teeth into each of their limbs, because there was enough lizardfolk to do that, and tore them apart like rabid dogs. It was horrific. When Lebeyu saw that the battle had turned, he tried to carve a path out of there but his leg was torn off and by the time he got his arm out of one of the wrestler's mouths the entire camp was finished dining on his companions and were ready for the main course.

It isn't unreasonable to take down a Nightcreature mate with a starding adventurer.

You just have to get a really good opening strike.

i beat my first mission with a high master swordsman and dabbling shield and turn it in at a fort recruit companions there and upon heading away from fort i encounter some bandits and murder them quite easily (For me) nearly all companions dead except 1. accidentally attack him. Whoops! notice that my target was killed by something or the other so i head back to the fort. to find out that they are now hostile so i murder the entire fort because i felt like it. noticed right about there that my adventurer was amazing at hacking off limbs. so then i head off to find another civ that isn't hostile. i ended up out after dark and boogeymen appeared they were pretty easily for the body part remover. fun. end up murdering like 5 civs and over 50 bogeymen when i come down from the world map into a whole that i can not get out of and cant switch to the map to travel   :-\ most successful adventurer I've made...  :'(

I start a keeper archer with genesis mod, and am tasked to kill a bandit leader in the middle of a wasteland. So I travel there and this is how it played out.

Apparently I couldn't sneak because somebody could see me, so I instead pressed forward and discover an axe man and the leader, an archer.

I take out the axeman with relative ease, however the leader got two shots in before I threw a fire bolt at her, setting the nearby plantlife on fire.

After that I give into pain and watch as the fire consumes her. Then, once I wake up, I checked if the fire did any damage and discover this:

After that I was glad I only had pain

Hey anyone remember the Power Rangers and how they would always fall after a fight then explode?

I actually had that happen. A character died, fell over, and burst into flames.

I just had a remarkably fun and short adventure. I genned a human who went by the name "Thon Flowerthrones", and began my game in the year 50. Thon killed a troglodyte within the first day, and went on to slay a kobold bandit, before wiping out 5 human bandits without sustaining any injury. This gained her the title of "the Heavenly Chastity of Markets". Barely 4 days after the start of the adventure, she accepted a quest to slay a Night Creature, the wicked crone Usmdas Fatalshadow. What the peasants failed to mention is that the lair in which she resided was home to no fewer than four night creatures. Thon made her way to the lair, barely half a day's travel from the nearest collection of hovels, and kicked down the door in the entranceway. She was confronted with the sight of two wicked crones, as well as one of their spouses, gathered around the corpse of an elf.

Within seconds, she was fighting desperately to make it to open air as the three mobbed her. One of the crones charged, falling into her, and both rolled into the midday sun. Thon rolled away from the crone, only to come face to face with the spouse. The second crone had already left the shelter of their lair, and the first was approaching rapidly. Encumbered by weapons and clothing looted from her previous enemies, Thon was unable to flee and had only one option. In quick succession, she severed the left leg, right hand and head of the spouse, and then backpedalled to gain a few moments. Thon opened her pack, and began flinging spears, flails and daggers at the approaching creatures, but most flew wide, with the remainder doing little injury to her opponents. They were upon her.

After a long battle, she was fatally wounded, bleeding from dozens of cuts, with a collapsed lung and severed spinal cord. Thon crawled toward the relative shelter of the lair, leaving a trail of blood on the tall grass. As she rounded the corner of the entranceway, a fourth night creature appeared. All hope lost, she put up a short, desperate fight, quickly losing her greatsword, and eventually reduced to punching at its feet and legs with her one remaining hand, until merciful death arrived.

That is all.

Edit: To make this clear, I fought and killed three night creatures with a brand new adventurer before being cherrytapped by a fourth that I didn't even know was there while trying to sleep it off in their lair.

My adventurer was chasing some vultures when a sturgeon in the river snatched one out of the air and swiftly killed it. That's a fish I won't be touching!

I modded my game to let humans use blowguns and I went out to a dry tropical area. At night, I was ambushed by bogeymen. I dared not shoot, so I used my copper dagger (just 'copper dagger', not 'large copper dagger'), and even then I only fought when one was right next to me. I picked up 16 obsidian pebbles I intended to sharpen on my way to a town. The nearest one on my country was across the ENTIRE land. Later, at about 11:20 a.m. DF time, I was ambushed by 3 goblins. Two speargoblins (one a leader) and an axegoblin. I threw one rock at the leader. It missed. I took another fling. It hit him in the hand. Third throw missed again. The fourth shot I took was INSANELY lucky. It hit the leader in the head, jammed the skull through the brain and killed him.

I played as a dwarf and found an ENOURMOUS bandit camp. the are that contains the items was completely full, and there were probably about 75 overall of humans, goblins, dwarves and elves. I killed about 25 by kiting them, and managed to avoid all of the arrows/bolts, until one hit me in the hand, tearing the skin. suddenly my adventurer thinks

'They hit me in the hand! I won't bother dodging the bolts and arrows now, as I will surely die from this grievous wound!'

there were about 10 crossbowmen and bowmen. and they at least one fired every turn, and after the minor cut, they all started hitting me. then, I was shot in the head, tearing the upper spie's nervous tissue, and I was beaten to death by a bunch of wrestlers.

YOU FUCK OF AN ADVENTURER! YOU WERE DOING SO FUCKING WELL!

Try getting a bolt in the hand, then try to dodge all the other arrows flying at you. Shit's painful man! But I suppose this is a dorf we're talking about, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect him to not cry like an elf and get back to the murdering.

Anyway, just got my skull caved in by my mace man companion after not looking at was first on the attack list and slicing my peasant companion's head off.

My current adventurer is doing pretty well. I decided to play it safe with this one. My last few adventurers died early on from stupid things like drowning, getting bit by a camel, mistaking an elven village for an actual village and getting stuck out in the middle of nowhere at night and shortly becoming food for bogeymen.

I had an interesting fight with a pikeman. My guy was pretty good at ambushing but not so good at throwing. I decided to try my luck and grabbed a few rocks and lobbed them at the pikeman. I managed to sneak close enough so that most of the rocks actually hit. It took a whole lot of rocks but they managed to do enough damage to knock him unconscious. After that I just snuck up to him and stabbed him in the head.

Found a night creature lair. Snuck inside and looked around. Just inside the entrance there's a butchered human with a good bit of human meat. Didn't have anything else on him that was worth anything. Went a little further and found the night creature. He had a bunch of coins lying around him but since I was playing it safe I decided to get a bit stronger and come back later.
