I once spawned in a hamlet half underwater, in a building half way in a river i discovered, promptly drowned as water rushed inside and all the citizens stood on the other side of the river 1 z over me. Human engineering is pretty sadistic at times, i imagine these people are all cannibal inbreds, driven mad from years of eating humans in their tiny 4x3 hovel, and i could have gotten in on the fun if I had at least novice swimmer!

Dothan Seeddangled the Squashed Escort of Prisons was a human of extraordinary birth. Having over a dozen human kills under his belt did not make him a hero, but proved that he was more than just some nobody. With sword and shield he charged into the camps of bandits and brigands and reduced them to a pile of blood and limbs, putting them down mercilessly for their crimes.

One day Dothan set out to face a new foe; the overlord Lonel Kingdomsmatches. He cut through the first three combatants in his path, rendering them in 2-3 strokes apiece. Then he came upon their leader herself, alongside a single remaining pikeman cohort. Against the henchman the battle was easily won; a stab to the guts and a slice to the arm rendered him unarmed and nauseous. He did not even bother finishing him before moving on to Lonel, who came at him with axe in hand.

For the first time since taking up arms, Dothan found himself pitted against a worthy adversary. The two danced about one another, dodging and parrying all strikes that came their way. The swordsman did manage to land two hits, but they were superficial cuts that failed to even penetrate the fat of her skin. It was Lonel who claimed the first true blow of battle when she hacked into his foot. Thankfully it was not severed, but the limb immediately gave way under his weight and a steady spurt of blood oozed from it.

The overlord initially fled as Dothan fell to the ground, perhaps sensing that both could escape with no further injury. Indeed, the idea of flight did occur to the man. With both opponents so far away he could easily slip off to recover and return another day. He was already bleeding out of an artery, but if he could halt the bloodflow the foot would not be lost and he would be his old self again. But in a moment of decisiveness he opted against it, and so with bloody fury crawled after his prey.

When the fighting resumed it was joined by the pikeman. As he did nothing but puke and throw his weak limbs at Dothan he was mostly ignored, with the battle still raging between the latter and Lonel. This time the axewoman suffered a few more serious injuries, but still nothing grievous. As he attempted to bring her to ground level she landed a deciding blow to his sword-arm. It remained intact but fell limp from the strike, flopping to the ground uselessly with his sword still in its liquid grip. Lonel turned and ran again, perhaps leaving her suffering cohort to finish the job.

He was not finished though. Not just yet. Though several more fountains of blood had opened up on his body he continued to do battle with the pikeman. Shield intercepted fist while his teeth dug into the bandit's flesh, eventually rendering him unconscious so that he could bash his exposed head in. Deciding he wanted to keep the shield (indeed, defense was probably the only reason either he or his nemesis were still alive) he hurled the sword after Lonel. It struck but merely bruised, and the raging battle entered its third act.

Dothan's teeth, and Lonel's axe. As one lunged the other dipped, and as the other swung one rolled. Over the course of this particular clash the axe found its way to Dothan's good leg, which was cut away completely. Another, then, forced a portion of his bone through a lung, stifling the very air he breathed. It was here that Dothan came to terms with his looming mortality; his other injuries were not damning, but he had crossed the event horizon. How much blood had he lost with that leg? How much filled the dirt already? He knew, here and now, that he would not escape this camp alive. Escape was no longer an option, and with his death sentence now scheduled he resolved to take his foe with him to the afterlife, with whatever strength remained in his body.

The overlord made not a single wound beyond that point. Dothan's shield was a nigh-unbreakable fortress, deflecting strike after strike after strike. His teeth sunk into her foot and with what he believed to be dying gasps he flung her to and fro, ripping the appendage to bloody ribbons. It took him a moment to realize that she no longer struggled. Lonel, overlord of The Disemboweled Beaches, had been the first to bleed out.

Initially the swordsman just wanted to distance himself from the bandits. To find a place where he could die alone, untainted by those criminals he had felled. He hardly expected to even leave the camp, but by some miracle he made it even farther. The bleeding stopped, and his breath found a more comfortable regularity. His wounds would not claim his life. As an adventurer, however, he was effectively dead. He would never see his left leg again, and the wounded arm never regained movement. It was all he could do to drag himself to Calledfancy - a quaint village not far from the site of his near-death battle. And it was in Calledfancy that he remained, living a life of peace as he told tales of his wanderings to any who might lend an ear.

Finally learned how to adventure properly  :D

Vettkinna Rainbrain started off as a lowly elf peasant. Upon journeying into the wilds, she found a human bandit camp and was able to steal some goods. Returning to the nearby town, she decided to trade the stolen goods for a copper bow with some metal arrows and started dabbling with it. Little did she know that this would be the start of her legendary acts of heroism. She traveled the land and accepted quests to put down troublesome bandits. A few days and several arrow littered corpses later, she traded her goods for a finely crafted +bronze whip+, and it turns out that she was quite gifted with it. Armed with her trusty whip, a bronze shield and her rope reed fiber clothing, she unleashes pain upon her foes and tearing brains left and right. For her heroic acts, she became known as Vettkinna Rainbrain "The Pantomime of Moistening" by the local populace.

Her latest exploit involves her quest to slay a forest titan which was terrorizing a human hamlet. The temple was quite far, for she embarked on dawn from the local fortress and arrived on sunset. Sneaking around the temple, she found the hulking titan surrounded by a horde of gold coins and equipment, which probably used to belong to the dead skeletons lying around. Vettkinna was drowsy from the journey, and figuring that the titan would simply sit still on that same spot, she crawled to a secluded corner of the temple and made a quick snooze. Asleep, the night came and she was awakened by annoying cackling. Alas, as she got up from her sleep, a bogeyman made kicks her form behind, bruising her liver. Since she has never fought against these vile creatures of the night, she scrambles away, alerting the nearby forest titan. The hulking giant charges at her but Vettkinna dodges past him. Somehow, this diverted the bogeymen's attention to the titan and Vettkinna sneaked out of the battle to hide behind a limestone pillar. The four bogeymen ganged up on the hulking giant but because of its tough hide, the giant was able to put up a fight.

Vettkinna has never fought bogeymen before, let alone a titan, and stayed behind cover, contemplating on the dire situation. However, as the bogeymen started tearing off the titan's limbs one by one, she decided to enter the fray turning the battle into a crazy three-way fight between an elf, a titan and four bogeymen. Sneaking behind one of the bogeymen, she charged at it and started to whip its limbs apart. It was a difficult battle and the bogeyman managed to bruise her lower leg. Enraged, she lashed at the bogeyman's head with all her strength, cracking it open and smashing it's brain. The other three night creatures were still busy fighting the hand-less titan, and Vettkinna, filled with rage and blood-lust, started killing the bogeymen one by one. A few hours later, the bogeymen was reduced to just one man, and as Vettkinna was hitting it from behind, the titan promptly kicked and shattered the night creature's head.

The final battle was fought between an enraged little elf and an ancient hulking forest titan. The battle went for hours, almost reaching sunrise, for the titan, though hand-less and in extreme pain, still fought with what strength it has left. On a desperate attempt, the titan tried to bite the little elf warrior, but it was blocked by her bronze shield. Vettkinna, though in pain from her bruised liver and leg, counterattacks with her bronze whip. It hits the titan's head and the head sails off in an arc, concluding the battle. Relieved, she rests for a while and started checking out the titan's horde. Disappointed by the usual large human junk that's too big for her to wear, she searches more carefully. And then there it was, her reward, something that she never had before. It was probably owned by the nearby dead dwarf ages ago, but she now owns it and wears it with pride. Vettkinna Rainbrain "The Pantomime of Moistening" got her first copper breastplate.

Here's a screenshot of the aftermath:

I decided to try my hand at unarmed fighting and had two adventurers that concentrated on kicker and punching respectively.

The kicker was a male human Hero (superhuman strength, average everything else) who had skills in shield-use and ambushing. Unfortunately, he didn't get a shield to start with so he had to steal one from a bandit he murdered. Later he took another one from a kobold (which I know wouldn't make blocking more likely, I just wanted him to have something useful in both hands so stuff he picked up went straight in the backpack). Unfortunately, I got impatient while trawling around for armor and just ran into the nearest place with a monster in it, which happened to be a labyrinth. There I found out ambushing it counter-intuitive because it's totally dark down there, and it killed the dude in the second it takes you to realize you've been spotted and get back to regular speed.

The puncher is a female elf Hero (superelven agility) who uses dodging, wrestling, and some throwing. She's been more successful so far: after killing several bandits she took on a winged horror. She grabbed its arms to always be able to knock it down, gouged its eyes out, and kept punching it in various places. However, she was never doing lethal damage and started collapsing from exhaustion. After that I decided to quick travel, then come back and try again. After repeating the same process and also not getting anywhere (also, the damn thing flied for the first time ever), I decided to go grab one of the weapon she threw at it earlier to finish it off, which wasn't too much of a problem since the creature was again blinded and just stood there once you were away from it. Since those had been scattered who knows where, she looked in its lair, found a pick, and killed it with three attacks. In the process she became a Legendary Fighter and Wrestler and is no the lookout for more missions.

I just became a legendary thrower along with a legendary dodger. Superhuman strength, agility, recuperation. I have just killed single-handedly a lance of 13 kobold "bowbolds" and proceeded to pick up their arrows. I got around 179 of them. Wow!

I proceed to one-shot or two-shot folks from ~15 tiles away (I have points in observer and ambusher) and now have an army of armed, armored cannon fodder  :D

Oh, and I left a bronze colossus in a murky pool. I then waited a while and when night came... "freeze"  ;D  8)

ops, Facepalm :)

EDIT: created a second elf, and knowing that humans hate me i run away, and i jump in a frozen river. it taws a bit later, and i choose to attack a sturgeon, for gaining some materials(i use genesis custom reaction). I hit him with my wooden sword some turns.

if elephant are unstoppabe dwarf-killer, sturgeon should be the deadliest enemy of elves, because suddenly he chopped both my arms and a leg off!!!
Gonna create another adventurer...

My elf striker/wrestler continued the success and eventually got a few companions to speed things up. Eventually she was tasked with killing a dragon, which I've never actually done before.

So she got as many companions as she could (18) and the thing was killed with a halberd before she could even attack it.

Then she went into another lair nearby and got her spine severed by a winged horror's knife, even though she'd killed a half dozen of those things before, though the companions managed to kill it first.

Injury geometry is something Toady is still working on. We should just be happy that an arrow can no longer piece multiple organs nowhere near each other.

It could also mean that they fired from behind as you looked at them so you were actually facing them as the bolt struck your tooth.
