Which is a better weapon for an adventurer, an artifact iron mace or masterwork adamantine battleaxe?
I'm also wondering: how beatable are demons by vampire adventurers? Can't decide if I should breach HFS or not. Can demons be raised by necromancers?
1. Two different styles of weapon are difficult to compare. Artefact iron mace (blunt) gains a x3 to hit quality modifier and will be very good for bashing skulls. Masterwork Adamantine battleaxe gains a x2 to hit quality modifier and will be very good at slicing limbs off - keep both for different things. Some enemies are more vulnerable to blunt or edged attacks (e.g. try killing a bronze colossus or a clothed demon law-giver with a bladed weapon).
Second point to consider is your adventurer size. If you are human you will manage to wield either of those singlegrasp. A mace and a battleaxe are size 800, and depending on your adventurer's size that may be too big for them to wield in one hand (if you are a dwarf or an elf). Try equipping a weapon and removing your shield to see if it is displayed as "multigrasp" in your inventory. If it is, you'd be better finding a war hammer (400) or short-sword (300). You can still use multigrasp weapons in one hand, but you get a hit penalty.
2. Demons are generally killable unless they are wearing clothing, or made of very hard/dense material. They are very large though (often >16000 urists, roughly 16 tons) so if they grab you they can easily tear limbs off. Sneak attacks work best.
Demon law-givers are usually attired in leather clothing, which is scaled up to fit their 16 ton bodies. This makes the leather about a foot thick, and edged weapons will glance off. These guys are significantly harder to kill.
3. Demons cannot be reanimated.
