My fresh human adventurer has stumbled upon a whole civ where nearly every village has their own vamp... And desperately licks and drinks all vamp blood without infection. The vampire abundancy must be the reason for there not being any warriors for hire.

My character was an average-sized human. Somehow, she got something stuck in her teeth. I should try to draw this...

Picked up a posse of bored townspeople to go on an adventure with my unarmed fighter human. Turned out to be pretty epic.

An elven bone carver, a dwarven armorer, a human trader, and a human weaver lead by a human wrestler all challenged a jaguar of the southern wilds. On the way back the group stopped to rest and woke to find themselves surrounded. Trapped on all sides by Kobolds arrows sang as they cut the air and passed within inches off their targets. In the group quickly became separated trying to focus their sleep blurred eyes on one enemy knowing that there were ten or more that they couldn't see, dodging from pure instinct against the hail of shimmering arrows that sliced through the blackness of the night. One mistep spelled certain death.  Then a visceral howl came from the shadows, dingos.

An entire pack savage with hunger set upon the kobolds and the adventurers joining in the melee. Tooth and blade collided as the raiders and the beasts and the adventurers brought their force to bear. Each group was bound by unbreakable coven, to their families who needed pilfered loot to survive, to the pack that bore and raised them, to the friends they'd sworn to protect. Hatred honor and hunger raged like dread storms as the sounds of combat echoed in the night. Each combatant inspired by primal strength fear and determination laid their life on the battle field but went into the breach unaware that the angel of death walked among them.

With newfound fury Osman Darkseer, The Trade of Cacti lashed out with fist and foot every blow finding it's mark and leaving shattered bones and writhing victims in it's wake. Dingos fell on him only to be rebuked with a single deadly stroke connecting with their heads and killing them where they stood. The light armor of Kobolds gave under the terrifying impact that splintered bones and pureed organs. The screams of agony, anguish, and unmistakable fear split the night as the foe fell in droves to the impossibly fast warrior. The beasts and bandits learned their mistake too late, only they who hunted predators would be caught in this trap.

Darkseer grew more frantic in the chaos searching for his comrades before they fell. The weaver lie broken, two shattered dingoes at his feet and a kobold standing over him bow drawn. With no warning an iron booted foot reduced the kobolds ribcage to shrapnel and drove the fragments into it's heart.  The elf was set upon by a dingo jaws tightly clamped around her head, it never saw the blow that struck it down. The dwarf returned triumphant boasting the slayings of two dingos and a kobold. The Merchant came from the north his hand a bloody, hastilly wrapped stump. He killed only one dingo and paid for it a hefty price. The elf was injured beyond help and before the sun rose she had died.

The party moved northward, less cocky now. They knew that overconfidence had dire costs. They went without rest to return to the safety of the city and put the grisly battle behind them an lay the elf to rest in the catacombs. By chance they stumbled upon a vast structure of pillars. Inquisitively but cautiously they explored the surroundings looking for any sign of the shrine's purpose. Osman peeked over a sharp cliff and discovered first vast riches in coins an weapons strewn about, second a great pile of corpses, and if he saw the titan it was too late to act. The infernal moth ensnared him in it's webs but before disappeared into it's with it's terrible maw it's great head fell to the ground.

With a single stroke of his silver knife the merchant cleanly severed the head of the titan and claimed it's vast treasures for the party. Reinvigored by their victory the party made the final push north. Home was in sight. All that remained was the great river, deep and wide it separated them from friendly shores. Osman was first in the water and first to see the danger. Alligators. The dwarf and merchant were snapped up quickly. They drew their blades to fight but they were hopelessly outmatched. Osman swam to save the merchant first trying to distract the beast by kicking at it's small legs. As the water filled with blood and the beast refused sank it's jaws into the merchants hand Osmanrefused to bury another comrade,  an ancient oath was broken. Darkseer pulled from his pack an iron blade inscribed with images of a forgotten order and with a single expert stroke cleanly separated the alligators head from it's body.

The dwarf was the poorest swimmer and as his lungs filled with water he saw Osman Darkseer drive a blade into the black heart of the beast that slew him. The body was hauled to shore and Osman stood with the Merchant waited for the weaver to join them. A cry of anguish came from the river and the pair flew to the aid of their wounded comrade. Lying on the shore the weaver's right arm an left leg had been torn from his body by an unseen sturgeon. Against all odds the weaver survived, dragging himself along the ground fast enough to keep up with his allies. When they reached the capitol they felt none of the joy they had anticipated. The weaver lost an arm and leg, the merchant lost the use of one hand and the entirety of the other, the elf and the dwarf were both slung over the shoulders of the disgraced Osman Darkseer.  They laid their dead to rest in the catacombs and told the holy leader the First Beer of their victories and losses over the jaguar, the kobold chief, the titan, and the beasts of the river. Pleased with their victories he begged of them another service, the slaying of a cave dragon to the east.

The three battered warriors swore again to go again to venture into the wilds, to wander the earth for the rest of their days fighting wickedness wherever it may rest it's head. To pay the cost of valor one thousand times over, to avenge the dead, to justify the killing to fight for their kingom until the bitter end.

Turns out my arm has been impaled on a copper pike for several weeks. My character may need a few more points in observation.

No they're usually much higher. Vampires get a historical kill every time they feed, if you gen a world for a few hundred years you'll routinely get vampires with 5000+ kills. Before Toady fixed trophies cutting off a vampires arm resulted in ten solid minutes of clicking through pages of "has lost hold of dwarf hair kajigger".

Hello!

I just mentioned the positive outlook I had upon the world I just genned. So I started my adventures (human peasant of a big human civ). I started with an iron long sword(!) and a bronze shield (!!) - usually I get something like a copper 2-handed sword or something else I don't like, so the combination was already great. Asking for quests to find out what's available, there were quite a number of werebeasts in the area - perfect practice material.

So, I head of to the nearest lair, finding it swiftly. And it is a perfect opportunity! A copper breast plate and copper gauntlets!!! (Okay, not the best things, but still a good starting armor. And the werebeast is in human form as I hoped. So, I start fighting the werebeast peasant - and am constantly evaded. I land a minor wound to the leg, but that does not stop the peasant - who is unarmed and still bruises my lung through the breastplate...

My adventurer grows tired, the peasant grabs her by her teeth..
Quote
The Peasant releases the grip of The Peasant's left upper arm on Your lower right back teeth.
The Peasant grabs You by the third finger, left hand with her right upper arm!
The Peasant punches You in the head with her right hand, bruising the muscle, jamming the skull through the brain and tearing the brain!
You have been struck down.
...
I guess a slightly skilled werepeasant is something to be careful with (^_^;;

Yours,
Deathworks

EDIT: I just started a new adventurer in that same world. Guess what, she carries a silver two-handed sword and a copper shield! ARGH!

Oh wow.

I was holding down 8 to go upwards on the screen, and just held it, making my adventurer run extremely fast. I then happened to run into a rhinoceros, and kicked it so hard it fell over in pain. I then ran away (it was with around 8 others, but they all were like "AW HELL NAW" and ran away), before deciding to come back. I'm gonna beat it to death now.

I had a long trip and I've spent two solid days doing nothing but eating. I ate a milkfish, half a dingo, and an entire alligator and I'm still hungry. I think hunger may need to be retooled.

Hi!

Yes, a lot of the hunger/thirst settings need rebalancing (a normal-sized crab I killed in a previous 34.x version yielded more meat than an eagle - the description clearly calling it a tiny creature!). But as long as we can live with them, I guess we can wait for the fine-tuning. Toady One's current wave of massive improvements is already so impressive that this is negligible at the moment.

Anyhow, this world is beginning to creep me out. I get the feeling that they are reading the boards. First, the world surprises me with a dwarven civilization called "The Dangerous Work" - clearly pointing out the events reported here on the forums (I haven't played fortress in a while AND I usually keep casualty rate extremely low by having no invaders and only slow growth). Then, after the death of my first adventurer, my second adventurer gets exactly the worst possible starting equipment about which I complained just minutes before on the forums. And now, I cross an evil biome and suddenly notice my character trailing something red - am I bleeding? Pressing 'z' reveals nothing, so I check with 'l': Dwarven blood... ??? I haven't fought any dwarves and besides, I just took a bath in a river, so I shouldn't trail blood of any kind. Then I remember to press 'W':

Quote
It is raining.
Dwarf blood is falling from the sky.
The sky above you is a uniform and dark gray.
The sun is in the eastern sky behind the clouds.
There is a gentle breeze blowing from the west.

Thus far, I only had filth or slime falling from the sky, this is the first blood I have seen - and it makes sense looking through the posts on the dwarf mode forums. I am telling you, the game is developing its own awareness :) :) :)

In other news, I have followed my standard procedure and put the two-handed sword in my backpack, instead using my large copper dagger for combat - even though I didn't have any skill with it in the beginning. My first kill then was a werebeast in human form (just adding insult to injury, if you look at the untimely demise of my previous adventurer). It was an interesting fight in her lair.

After a few misses, I cut off her ear, and shocked about this, she moved away. Since the tunnel was only one tile wide, I made the quick decision to throw the two-handed sword at her. I didn't have any skill in throwing and had not practiced it in any way, but I figured that the narrow tunnel may make it difficult to avoid such a big object. And if nothing else, having removed the weight should speed me up. Sure enough, it hit her shattering false ribs and opening an artery.

Later on, while fighting a peregrine, the bird suddenly took flight after getting somewhat injured. Again, I spontaneous throw the sword at it, figuring that at least I will be faster, even if I miss, out in the open. But I am lucky and the sword injures seriously the bird's leg, causing enough pain that I can catch up and finish the job.

Mmmmhhhh, I am beginning to like that sword, but in the end, I am still determined to sell it in the first town where I can get a normal, one-handed sword.

Yours,
Deathworks

I started up a new dwarven hero recently and the second swing of her first human opponent knocked her skull into her brain.  Whoops.

WTF? I was adventuring, and suddenly it said:

Quote
You have been caught in devilish dust cloud!

Now that, by itself wouldn't be very weird but when I check my status I get this:

Quote
"Human Recruit devilish dust zombie"

How the hell did this happen? I checked myself, and I appear fine.

The ash cloud also appears to be going across the countryside.

Wait. I know what has happened. I am a thrall! This was confirmed when a "Devilish dust zombie honeybadger" Attacked Me. And it appears that I don't need to eat and drink.

Hello!

At least the insults by the game yield some successful adventuring. Despite starting off about 2 days or so at top speed away from a human town where trade is possible, my adventurer has made it, and there are quite a number of shops with tradable goods. The silver two-handed sword got sold to get some leather armor, as I figured that protection was currently more important - especially since I have now gained some skill in dagger fighting. On my way to the town, I killed a fox, some weasels and some birds and also tried to kill a wolf. I aborted that one though as the entire pack wanted to discuss this personally with me. Fortunately, there was a hillside where I was able to start hiding (two tiles away from the closest wolf).

By now, I have killed a few more werebeasts (in human or elven form), finding again a bit of copper armor in the loot, and earning my first additional name. Let's see how far this adventurer will float - although the town is already in the really cold area of the world, so I may want to move north again some time soon :) :) :)

Yours,
Deathworks

EDIT: Okay, I save-scummed once because I wanted to see just how mediocre armor with a dagger fares against a halberd with no worthy armor fares, but then I travelled across country and decided to hunt a moose...
Okay, so I will start a new adventurer - but that world is definitely fun (lots of werebeasts :) :) :) )

Hi!

I am really beginning to love this world. My next adventurer starts in a small town (really small, but with functioning shops). As I make my way around it, looking for a weapon smith and also getting my bearings, I stumble across the small keep in its center once too often and decide to have a short peek into the dungeon, to see what those look like.

In the dungeon, right in the second room I find, besides some statues of unexplained nature, several kobold skeletons. Mmmmhhhh, so I continue exploring and sure enough, I find a *small giant cave spider silk loincloth*. Okay, so it wasn't a dwarven sock, but I still find this very typical of all the things I know about dwarf mode.

So, I set out to explore and find a town with better bargains. On my way, I cross again a bit of evil biome. Again, I start trailing red, and looking up at the sky, I get the following message:

Quote
Goblin blood is falling from the sky.
The sky is otherwise clear above you.
The sun is in the western sky.
The waxing gibbous moon is rising in the east.
There is a cool breeze blowing from the west.

So, I have encountered two types of stuff falling from the sky in this world - once dwarven blood and now goblin blood. This is just so fitting.

In other news, I found out that werebeasts respond to the phase of the moon and not the moon actually being up on the sky. This delayed my slaying of a wereantilope considerably.

In addition, I got an infection in my hand which simply wouldn't go away, neither by fast travelling inside a town nor by sleeping a lot...

But that doesn't matter anymore. On my way to another town, I came across the lair of a gloom troll, and seeing that it was without armor and only holding a carving knife, I thought I could give it a try.... The result was that I have put gloom trolls on my list of creatures not to bother in the early game, and that I have started a new adventurer, who actually started in exactly the same region as the previous one, despite their civ having quite a sizable territory.

I hope this adventurer will live a bit longer,

I awoke in a human town. I knew it was human because the houses were far to big. They were above ground. They were also a shamble of whatever random materials seemed to be on hand. No dwarf would have any crazy notion to create so many ugly and undefended huts. Needless to say the town was deserted. I stayed for a moment in the broken hovel that was my current shelter, pondering how I had gotten here. It could not have been as a punishment for failing a mandate. I was a spear dwarf it seemed. I had some bronze armor, a stout shield and a bronze spear which was not to badly made. Maybe I had been in some battle and left unconscious here. Maybe my squad did not know were to look for me.

A quick survey of my rations said I would survive for the next few days. At least I wouldn't die of starvation or dehydration. My canteen was full and I had a few good o'le *prepared ant brain* biscuits. A little starchy, but full of sugar and protein. Armok knows what the cook used to glue it all together.

I did not have any injuries that I could tell, I felt confident that I could handle the spear I carried. I took it upon myself to at least survey the area. I climbed to the top of the nearest hovel. The town was quite large, it spanned two sides of a river. There was a keep. I saw a few small fires, from what might have been humans, but they were very far spread apart. I climbed down and searched around. Not a single soul lived on the street I found myself on. It seemed like the town was abandoned a few days ago. There was nothing of value in the broken down shops. I can only surmise that this town was sacked or there was some horrible monster loose on the streets. Or that the keep was were a terrible demon or undead abomination lived. I did not decide it was a good idea to go into the sewers or visit the keep. Best to find some safe looking peasant to ambush and question.

A few hours later I had made it across a bridge to the more rural area of town hoping only the inner city was in disarray. This part of town was empty too, though there were less burned out houses. I had spotted what looked to be signs of habitation from my earlier perch in the denser district of the city. I searched in a wide circle, peeking my head into every door. The town was still empty.

I was about to give up and try to make a journey to another city when I rounded the corner of a house. Just around the corner I was stung by the sharp crack of a dart against my bronze mail shirt. It bounced off harmlessly. I spotted the attacker. It was a long humanoid snake. Dressed in little but gold jewelry and using a blowgun. I charged the serpent and at close range it could not bring any threat to me. I dispatched it with a few spear thrusts. I took the blowgun and the few darts I could find. They might come in handy against overwhelming odds. I was about to set off again when another serpent jumped out of the river. It hissed something profane in its un-Armok-ly snakelike language. I charged towards the rivers edge and took it by surprise. It dodged with deftly serpentine grace. I parried a blow with my shield. The next strike rang true and I wounded its arm. It dropped its blowgun. I rammed my spear towards its heart hoping for a quick kill. The beast dived into the river, bleeding severely.

I pondered for a moment, this must be why the town had fallen. The vile creatures had ambushed the city from the waterway. I will never understand why humans are so daft at building any sort of fortification. We would have been wiped out long ago had we built with such reckless abandon.

My thoughts wandered back to the river. I could see a trail of blood billowing up in the water as the wounded beast tried to swim away. I did not wish to let it live. I dived in afterwards, blood lust and revenge in my heart. I wished to end this nemesis and not have it escape my grasp. I swam down the river following the trail as the current took it. Surely the creature was to weak to swim against such a strong current. It swept down around a long curve and up against a hard wall were the bridge was. The blood collected and pooled in the water here and I had a hard time resisting the eddies by the bridge. I figured the creature drowned and lost. I tried to turn around and swim up stream. With a little effort I made it almost back to shore.

A sharp pain broke out in my leg all of a sudden. When I turned to confront my assailant I found I was surrounded by two of the foul serpent-men. I desperately tried to stab with my spear in the water. I knew I had a chance fighting in the water, I had no trouble swimming it seemed. I had dispatched two of the foul things already. But the odds and my hubris were against me, and these beasts were at home here. I was struck in the chest, my liver pierced. I knew I was doomed. I had but one strike left in me. It did not land. The water closed in and all went silent. There was no more river, no more water, only the silence. I wondered what would happen next. I found comfort in the fact that at least there were no more serpent-men to contend with. I awaited Armok's guiding presence...

*Long story short I created a hero dwarf, promptly forgot what he was called, explored an abandoned town. Deftly felled two serpent men (this is new, I normally die to rabid wolfs or bandit special forces in this game). I got arrogant gave chase and paid the ultimate price.

Pretty good short adventure and hope you liked the narrative.
